The weekend of awesome catch-up has officially begun since I have now watched SPN (s7 ep2).

Non-spoilery reaction: Eh. Some good stuff (and when I say good, I do mean really very good), but too soon to call how I'm finding this season thus far.

Spoilerly: Beware, here be ep SPOILERS... )

And now back to the rest of the planned catch-up, next is Doctor Who before the highlight of highlights Merlin (SQUEEE!) :)
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
So in a few hours it will be Friday. Yes, Loki, you express my feelings on this entirely:

Between now and Monday morning I will have been gifted with:

x. Supernatural (MWHAHAHAHAHA!).
x. Finale of Doctor Who (Haven't a clue what's going on but I love the characters so BRING IT ON!)
x. S4 première of Merlin (HAVE WE MENTIONED WE HAVE KNIGHTS NOW?!!)
x. Downton Abbey (Oh my heart! *clutches*)

In summary:

So after the build-up of the past few weeks, SPN has finally returned to the TV schedules. Between that and all the new interviews/promos for the next season of Merlin I really have been pinging off the walls recently.

Spoiler-free summary to the ep? In no particular order: I winced, I laughed, there were 'awww' moments and I'm looking forward to next week.

For the spoilers: slinking behind this tasteful cut are thoughts on Season 7, ep 1 of SPN... )

The last 2 weeks have been slightly rubbish to say the least on the work front. A quick lesson though; when talking to Medical Physicists be aware that use of the word 'Contaminated' will cause mild heart attacks. That said we were relieved to realise that it just meant that the water cascading through our office ceiling was maybe contaminated with only normal human fluids, not radioactive human fluids.

The fact that this was considered 'good news' gives you some idea of the kind of fortnight we've had. But! Enough on that.

On TV I'm continuing to be utterly smitten with The Hour. Next week looks like it's the last ep and I am full of woe over this; my Tuesday's will be sadder without their usual dose of Dominic West and Ben Whishaw's characters fabulous love hate-hate snark.

I've also been to the local flea pit a few times. Horrible Bosses was entertaining as all the bosses were tremendous fun, although I'm glad we got in on discounted prices (thank you, Orange Wednesdays) as when the film was good it was down to the calibre of the cast rather than direction/writing. Rise of the Planet of the Apes? Was awesome. I think me and the workmates were the only ones who got the nods to the original film, but we all left feeling it was money very well spent. Tom Felton also clearly had a blast and it was fun to see him post-HP.

Vids also cheered me, have some recs for Supernatural and Merlin (with SPOILERS for the new series in both cases).

Merlin: someone has done S4 credits in the style of Game of Thrones, yet again it feels suitably epic.

Supernatural: An official trailer for S7. I may have pinged off the ceiling a little when I first saw this one :) Slinking behind a cut for some spoilery musings... )

Ending on some sugary fluff. Do take a peek at the pics the Merlin cast did to help raise money for a charity bike ride by one of the camera crew's relations. Also Misha showcasing his son's immaculate table manners (and looking like any true parent should, i.e. truly knackered) is a joy to behold.

So as the bus was trundling up the hill I got a text from a mate reassuring me not to worry about the huge plume of smoke hanging over our city as it wasn't coming from any of our houses. Cue turning to actually look out the window as the bus reached the viewpoint and, oh yes, there was a massive cloud of smoke drifting up from and across the city.

Nothing like driving towards a black plume of unknown origin in order to get home to make you realise just how actually genuinely angry you might be. For the record: no I don't live in London, in this instance the fire was just a fire. The anger part came from the way all of our initial reactions were governed by the actions of some complete twats in London, Birmingham and elsewhere.

Quite frankly said clotpoles have got enough media attention without me adding to it, so I'm going for a more positive approach:

In a break from British tradition it seems the closet thing to a symbol of defiance will not be the humble cup of tea. Nay, it will be The Broom. Or maybe #riotcleanup. It seems folks are organising a clean-up operation via Twitter/Facebook etc, so watch this space, ye pribbling boil-brained giglets of Gran Bretaña, I think there are some more folks of this isle that want to have their voices heard.

The weekend has been a most pleasant one. An old friend came to stay and we caught up on each other's news. We also ambled through Gunwharf, over some locals hills, and even made it to the local fleapit to catch a 3D showing of Captain America.

Film gets the thumbs up from me, as silly and as colourful as I was expecting and as delightfully fun. Hats off to Chris Evans (the American 'Human Torch' one, not the british plonker on radio specimen); I tend to like my heroes with some flaws to work through before they hit cosmic awesomeness, but despite his painful earnestness and 100% goodness etc etc even I was charmed by the captain.

But of course, the real highlight of the film was The Avengers 'trailer' at the end of the credits. Cut for SPOILERs but in summary, trailer was brilliant and both me and the mate were ready for May 2012 by the end... )

Finally, this interview with Misha about SPN S7 entertains me. (Warning: SPOILERS for S7, including in the link name). More musings on S7... )

I can't believe it's August already, just wrong wrong wrong *clings to passing time* Still, there are a couple of things that have made my day quite a bit brighter.

* The Hour on the BBC. Just caught up last night on the last 2 eps and OK I am sold on this. There is something about Ben Whishaw I can't quite pin down but it's hard to take your eyes off him. Then put him next to Dominic West, throw in some healthy snark and hate-hate vibes and watch the chemistry shine :)
* Castiel meeting The Ghostfacers. As fast as it's appearing on YouTube it's getting taken down, but it's an instant classic for me. For now there's a working link here or kinda sorta here.
* Promo pic of Gareth David-Lloyd's upcoming appearance on Warehouse 13. He's look great, married life has clearly done wonders, plus for some reason his character seems to be in steam-punk-esque pinstripe suit, waistcoat with the good old fobwatch for company.

All things being equal I may get a chance to see Captain America this weekend and so far the reactions I've seen have all be positive, so rock on :)

Ah, my geekish existence has been a cheerful one for the past few days.

x. Went to see The Syndicate at the theatre which had Sir Ian McKellen as its main star although there were loads of familiar faces (including Cheri Lunghi *squee*). All I can say is Sir Ian is a legend for a reason; he was phenomenal. There was also the added bonus of spotting familiar faces in the audience around us, including one Dame Judi Dench :)
x. Marvel have released a concept art poster for The Avengers which does look pretty damn cool. (GeekSyndicate also have images from the sort-of Avengers trailer which aired at the end of Captain America - although SPOILERS for the CA film itself apparently).
x. A refreshingly serious interview with Bradley James at the recent SDCC; he talks about the future of Arthur and Gwen, and indeed Arthur and Merlin. There is extra entertainment in reading the comments as, bless him, he does seem to have unwittingly peeved some of the more unique corners of fandom. Embedded behind here... )
x. Slightly grainy but still very much the first glimpse of the official Merlin series 4 trailer - HUZZAH! (SPOILERS for S4, obviously). Embed embed... )
x. Again a little grainy but still far too entertaining: Merlin S4 bloopers. Again SPOILERS for S4. Another embed... )

*sigh* Right, and now I suppose I best return to real life and get ready for work tomorrow *raspberry*

Ah life

Hmm. So yes I have feelings about all the news and the latest resignations/arrests/deaths. But for now my reactions will be kept off LJ, for now LJ will continue to be my little self-indulgent bubble of shallowness and happy thoughts.

So the parents and one of the spawn wound up visiting me this week. This brought rewards in the shape of a new pair of shoes (ooh!) and a trip to the cinema twice. One trip was of course to see 'Deathly Hallows Part 2', we all thoroughly enjoyed it. The second was to see 'Bridesmaids' which had the unintentional added humour value that comes with sitting next to a male and watching his reaction to the workings of the female brain. Cutting in case quote counts as SPOILER-y although it's not really... )

We also wound up watching The Apprentice final. The parents loathe with a passion any form of reality TV but were unwittingly ambushed by Dara O Briain's 'How To Get Hired' the night before where he basically showed highlights of the series so far. My personal favourite being when they introduced Jim with The Imperial March themetune. The parents were so horrified by what they saw that of course they wound up watching the final just so they could discuss in detail how vile/useless/whatever the entire thing was. (Although by the end they had each decided who they would have hired and were both thoroughly smug when Lord Sugar telepathically took their advice.)

Another acquisition from the weekend was the Mumford & Sons album which several folks have now suggested I try and yes you all get a gold star because yes I am very pleased with it :) Although for some unknown reason the SPN fandom seems to be on a mission to make a Dean/Cas fanvid to every single song on the album. I will rec this one, though, which manages to buck the trend in being, yes a little angsty, but overall a rather smile-inducingly hopeful one. Original post here. 'Sigh No More' - embedded behind this lovely cut... SPOILERS for up to S6 finale. )

AND FINALLY. Did I mention I flailed like a flaily thing when I saw A WHOLE 7 SECOND OFFICIAL FIRST PEEK AT MERLIN SERIES 4?!! as;dlfkja;lsdfkj;asldkfj!! Oh Merlin, I have missed you and your cracktastic awesomeness. Please be returning to us soon :) The whole glorious 7 seconds also embedded behind a lovely cut... )

So tonight was the UK première of Torchwood: Miracle Day. The run-up was an odd one for me; on the one hand my Torchwood (utterly insane and with a pterodactyl) was gone and not coming back, but on the other hand the casting announcements did make me go 'Ooooh'. The result was that while I was looking forward to TW's return, I wasn't excited and if I'd been out I probably would not have been in any hurry to watch the recorded ep (though I would definitely have watched it at some point. Maybe when I could do the whole series in one sitting).

My conclusions? Well, yes, it was fun. And oh it was good to see the familiar faces again. But as soon as the credits finished the BBC went into a trailer for The Apprentice final done to the music of 'Eye of the Tiger'. Which made me laugh quite a bit. And really look forward to seeing who gets hired. And basically made me realise that this was the reaction I probably should have been having for the long long looong teaser they gave for the rest of the TW season.

In short, yes, it's fine, it's fun. Thumbs up so far. I will tune in next week. But if you want gushing excitement... it may take a while. The new characters are entertaining and splendid but I'm feeling nothing for them so far. No doubt this will change as the season progresses so let's wait and see before passing final judgement.

Ah life. It's been busy, still I have a holiday to look forward to in October so there is light at the end of the tunnel. Anyway, posting just to confirm that yes I am still alive. Have some random thoughts that have crossed my mind this month.

x. Misha gives a few words on Castiel's role in S7 - obviously SPOILERS in the article for all of S6. My SPOILER-y thoughts behind this cut... )
x. I look down on you with my smugness, AKA Starz have cancelled Camelot and therefore I get to be officially smug over our Arthur being better than their Arthur (and by the by our Gawaine was totally hotter too). Just shows you should always add a talking dragon, works wonders. (Still, t'is a shame in that Eva Green was brilliant and although the show is complete tosh, I have been enjoying it so far.)
x. Blast from the Past - Barrowman tweeted a lovely pic of him and GDL when they were recording the radio plays (due next week before Miracle Day kicks off). Ah lads. There was a reason I fell so hard for the Jack/Ianto ship, they do look so pleasing together if nothing else.
x. The anticipation for Merlin S4 is building. For a taster try this: Wherein the Ugliness of the Cast doth offend the eye (no spoilers for S4). And for a slightly more SPOILER-y taster go here: Saturday Knight Fever, wherein we start to see what kind of official photoshoots will hopefully be heading our way in due course.
x. I went to see Pirates of the Carribean 4. My conclusion: utterly worth it if the idea of seeing Ian McShane as Blackbeard squaring up against Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa sends you into fannish glee. I also got to see Kung Fu Panda 2 which had me when they said Gary Oldman would be an evil white peacock. It does try to deal with the 'Adoption' issue with all the subtlety of a lead brick being dropped repeatedly on your toes, but the message was a good one and Po's dad is adorable so they get the thumbs up from me :)

Right, after dropping all this on you I'm going to beat a hasty retreat. Hope life is treating you all well!
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
In the world of fannish things this weekend has been a good one: I've continued to bask in the SPN S6 finale afterglow, Doctor Who gave me an ace finale, and Bradley gave fandom less than 12 hours notice that he and some of the knights would be playing in a charity football match this afternoon (gosh you would almost think he didn't want us to mob them...)

So from SPN have a vid rec: Phenomena is dead fun (though packed to the gills with SPOILERS for all of S6). Nothing like badass!Cas to warm the cockles. Embedding vid here so I can rewatch at leisure... )

Then on to Doctor Who. Non-spoilery: I give it a thumbs up although I'm still not entirely sure what is going on, though to be honest I don't care as I am now utterly smitten with our cast. SPOILER-y thoughts behind the cut... )

Back to Merlin and this year the Soccer 6 match was being held up north. This time, for the first time, we got an actual Team Merlin ♥ Yep, Bradley, Tom and Eoin led their team into the tournament. Pictures and reports will be few and far between given that no-one knew about it until pretty much the 11th hour, but there are good covering posts here and here with what pics and tweets can be found. Cutting for the results so far... )

And finally what post can be complete without some shameless boy kissing. A while back this still from the play The Pride caused a flutter in Merlin fandom due to a rather uncanny resemblance to Mssrs Morgan and James. Fast forward to today and we get this: Don't sit under that apple tree with anyone else but me... )
Another one for the 'the resemblance really is uncanny' folder then, I'm not complaining :)
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Okay this vid has literally made my entire week :) Basically it's fake Merlin credits for series 4 (so SPOILERS for series 1-3) but done in the style of The Tudors. Oh the pretty. Oh the epicness. I am ready for the next series to begin!

lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
For reasons I can't possibly imagine I'm once more craving some good old 'angels and demons' fic. I've read some great books in the past, namely:

x. 'Good Omens' (by Pratchett and Gaiman) - honestly, need I say more. A classic.
x. 'I, Lucifer' - who doesn't love a bit of devil POV. His perspective on us and his own siblings makes for great reading.
x. 'The Testament of Gideon Mack' - a journalist goes over the papers of a recently deceased minister who claims to have met and conversed with the devil. A tale of more questions than answers, this was a fun read.
x. 'Tales from the Wyrd Museum' - a kids book from back in the day but there were definitely demons; I remember it mainly because it was the first book to drum home the idea that actually a group of old-school, hard-core shepherds would not be easy to intimidate and that angels were possibly just a little bit mind-bogglingly-terrifying.

So if anyone can recommend some more titles of a similar theme please feel free to chip in with a suggestion; all recs welcome!
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Yep in the grand final of the TV Romance competition over at SpoilerTV.com it was Dean and Cas who emerged victorious. Considering their opposition was Kurt and Blaine I would have been happy whoever won, but what a fun poll that was :)

Post announcing the winners (SPOILERS for S6 SPN finale)
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
We're now at the grand final of SpoilerTV.com's 'TV Romance Competition'. And it's an all-round male affair. Yes, the final round is:

Dean/Castiel (SPN) vs. Kurt/Blaine (Glee).

T'is a tough choice but if you think you have the strength, do go vote!
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
So my non-spoilery reaction to SPN was: Hmm. Not Bad. Solid 3 stars out of 5. Roll on S7 *ahem*.

For more 'profound' thoughts please slip behind this artfully positioned LJ-cut: SPOILERS SPOILERS and yet more SPOILERS for all of SPN S6 and some casting news for S7... )

ETA: Oooh poll Time! Over on SpoilerTV.com they're at the semi-finals stage of their 'TV Romance Competition' and for once I actually know some of the couples they are talking about.
In Group A: it's Booth/Brennan (Bones) vs. Dean/Castiel (SPN).
In Group B: it's Chuck/Blair (Gossip Girl) vs. Kurt/Blaine (Glee).
Go vote, you know you want to!
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Stephen Lawrence pair face murder trial.

Reaction in the office was universally 'Oh my god... Good.'
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Look at this, posting about SPN more than once a year, wonders will never cease.

All I can say is this ep was made for me :)

SPOILERS behind the cut... )
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Ah, I have to hand it to SPN. Yet again I had all but stopped watching, and then I caught the last ep (ep 19 of S6 I believe) and lo! here I am and I've just inhaled eps 16-19 in one sitting.

Once more, at the last hour, SPN has swum up into my interest. Those of you who have been watching from the beginning may need to give me a refresher on what I've missed.

A tale of hunters, angels and demons - SPOILERS up to and including ep 19, season 6... )
