Yes, it's more Hiddles spam for you, dear FL. Because if I can't be shallow and obsessive on my own LJ then honestly what is the world coming to :)

x. 'How's that "tentative"?' - another charming War Horse interview with Cumberbatch and Hiddleston. This one memorable for a) Tom's Scottish accent (courtesy of his father, though I can't say how 'authentic' it really is), and b) a genuinely lovely bit of family history when he talks about the last Hiddleston who fought in WWI.
x. Because they all had to start somewhere: Hiddleston's impression of a Jurassic Park velociraptor. (Those sitting either side of him would include Richard Curtis since they are supposed to be talking War Horse. Yes Hiddles is a shameless attention seeking/spotlight stealing so-and-so).
x. 'Volare' - guessing that he looks about 12 I'm guessing this is from an early Hiddles film. Short and fun fanvid of what looks like the kind of summer holiday away with pals we all aspire to.

And finally: you may have heard that Hiddles is reading an erotic short story on stage in London this February. (He's one of 3 actors reading, the other tales include Angela Carter's 'Mr Lyon' - I love her fairy tales!) In case you mourning being unable to attend, the theatre have announced that there will be audio podcasts made available. Rejoice!

Oooh. Loki is nominated in the "Villain of the Year" category in the Virgin Media Movie Awards.

If you fancy it, do go and vote for him, even my mate who loathed the film thought Loki was fabulous :)

So American officials have with immediate effect shut down Megaupload.com.

There's a statement over here, looks like the book is being thrown at those involved. I guess MU is not coming back any time soon, if at all.

ETA: Bwhahaha - REVENGE!! Ah hell, it won't change anything, but that did amuse me.
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Despite my best intentions I do seem to be continuing with my Hiddleston phase. Curse you, blue eyes *shakes fist*

I finally saw The Deep Blue Sea (no, not the one with the mutant killer sharks). It's deliberately melodramatic and definitely an indie, art-y, Brit-flick. But all the actors are superb, in particular Weiz.

Then today a group of us from work sallied forth to the silver screen to see War Horse.

Non-spoiler-y reaction: great film, beautiful to look at, but I am definitely glad I read the book first. The humans are but passing chapters as the tale is from the horse's POV, but even so it was wonderful to see Sherlock gently teasing Loki as they prepared for a practice cavalry charge. Only word of caution? DO NOT SEE THIS FILM IF YOU HAVE ONE SINGLE DROP OF CYNICISM IN YOU. This is Spielberg and his ideal vision of ye olde English countryside and sunsets and all that jazz.

SPOILER-y reaction... )

In closing, have a gander at this interview with Cumberbatch and Hiddleston. It is slightly spoiler-y for their characters' fates in the film from 3 mins in, but the 1st minute is worth watching just for the epic bromance moment between the two ("Darling.")

lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Hehehe... yes I have finally seen the S2 finale of Sherlock. Thumbs up from me, and pleased to hear that S3 had already been green-lit back when they gave S2 the go-ahead.

SPOILERS for the third and final (for now) ep... )

So I guess that's us done for another year or so then. Au revoir, Sherlock, I look forward to our paths crossing again.

So the jury is still out over T. Hiddleston, but at the very least I am definitely having a resurgence of the Thor love, or at the very least a love of the dysfunctional family tale that for me is the main point of the film. To that end! Have a vid rec:

Shake it Out - gen - a vid all about fathers and sons, and to some extent kings (there are some nice similarities shown between Asgard/Jotunheim and Odin/Laufey). A slow-burning vid but a powerful one when you realise every scene/sequence has been very deliberately put together to tell a particular part of the tale.

Back home the LB clan has formally disbanded, with all the various siblings finally podding off to their various study cities. Till we meet again...

We did manage a final cinema outing before the paths parted, this time to see The Deep Blue Sea. You can tell that it's an adapted play, but I enjoyed it although at times the way it deliberately played as a melodrama did grate a bit (someone please mute that violinist). All the actors just shone in their roles though, Rachel Weisz in particular did a wonderful job. Glad I caught it :)
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Belated wishes of goodwill and peace to one and all, and of course happy 2012 :)

The LB clan have survived another Christmas. This year we attended the local nativity since our village appears to landed a variation of The Vicar of Dibley. He somehow managed to rope adult locals into playing some of the supporting roles, with the result that the play started in the pub (since the landlord was playing the, er, landlord). Yes, we sat there with our half-pints as the adult Angel Gabriel was upbraided for being too portly by a smaller angel, which set the mood for the rest of the piece as we followed the party from pub to square to church to pub again. Definitely put us in festive spirits :)

Anyway, these vids have made me smile over the past week or so.
x. A pre-Thor Loki in 32 seconds of song and dance - clip from a staged version of Cymbeline wherein one of the villains massacres an attempted serenade of the heroine.
x. George Takei is the broker of Star Peace - Takei is awesome. Watch him attempt to unite warring factions of Star Wars/Trek against a new and terrifying threat to sci-fi...
x. 20 minute firework display goes off in 50 seconds - exactly what it says on the tin. Oops?

Score!

So apropos of just one film I seem to be possibly developing a bit of a thing for Tom Hiddleston. Loki, I blame you. And Tom too for getting amusingly eyed-up by Mssr Hemsworth, then ticked-off by an interviewer for sitting indecently, before proving himself to be a film nerd who loved Indy and Back to the Future as a teen.

Anyway, I have reached that time of life where you resign yourself to the fact that the latest pretty young thing to catch your eye will actually be quite emphatically young, i.e. most definitely younger than you.

Except, stone the crows, in this instance the whippersnapper in question is actually older than me. Hurray! Yes admittedly it's by the skin of his teeth but STILL! It's been a manic and not particularly fruitful week so I will take my victories where I can :)
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
I've caught-up with yesterday's ep. My non-spoiler-y reaction mainly comes in 2 parts.

1) Bradley James. Sir. Whatever anyone else says, this series you have most emphatically become my King Arthur. Kudos.

2) The preview for next week? asd;lfjkadsfal;jskfjk;lsdf!!!11!! BRING IT.

For a slightly more lengthy SPOILER-y reaction to this ep and trailer for next week's... )

Ow. Somehow wound up having 2 work Christmas dinners in the space of 4 days. They were great fun but I need another weekend to recover.

In the meantime!

Vid rec: Wherever You Will Go - SPN, Dean/Cas. If like me you're a bit of sap at heart and in the mood for something nicely heartbreaking, this is a good vid looking back at the Dean/Cas over the years. Obviously SPOILERS for all of S7 so far.

In a more cheerful, surreal bit of news from the Twitter-verse: Eoin Macken is now following Misha Collins. I know the likelihoods of them ever actually exchanging words is remote, but even so the fandom crossover in my head was epic when I saw this bit of news :)
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Sharing this because I is a sap at heart. T'is the season that vids of a certain type begin appearing all over the TV. This latest offering from the Beeb gets some extra cred due to airing at the end of Frozen Planet when you're likely to be misty-eyed anyway, also because it is Sir David Attenborough telling us (not singing) in his oh so recognisable voice that this can be sometimes a rather wonderful world. And because it's Attenborough, you know he does actually mean it :)

lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Supernatural continues to entertain me; yes I still miss Cas and yes I think we see too little of Crowley, but even with these quibbles I am entertained.

SPOILERS for the latest ep... )

So, those were my thoughts. NEXT.

The latest casting SPOILER for an upcoming ep... )
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
I had no expectations of this ep whatsoever and while bits of it did drag a little, overall I was left a happy happy flailing ball of squee.

Also: "You know how the King loves his training" has become the new euphemism of the week. Excellent!

SPOILERS for Merlin ep 10... )

So we're starting to get scarily close to the finale *twitch* Yet again I have no idea what is coming next but I'm anxious and excited about finding out :)
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
I finally caught up with this week's Merlin, and after the snore-fest of last week my main reaction is: 'Now that's more like it.' I do have a feeling that the writers weren't intending me to find as many sections of this as hilarious as I did but whatevs.

SPOILERS for ep behind cut... wherein Arthur proves that despite Merlin's assertions, he may just have a brain after all... )

In conclusion: ROLL ON NEXT WEEK. I honestly have no idea where this is all heading, but I'm looking forward to finding out :)

OOOOOOH #2

No I have not yet seen Merlin - SPOIL ME AND DIE.

I take it you have all seen the cast of the Beeb's 2012 round of Shakespeare films?

Ben Whishaw. Jeremy Irons. Patrick Stewart. TOM HIDDLESTON. Sadly not all in the same film at the same time BUT STILL. Stick a fork in me I think I'm done :)

Oooh...

So apparently Ben Whishaw will be the new 'Q' in the next James Bond outing.

Whishaw's another one of these actors who sort of snuck in under my radar (courtesy of The Hour). Definitely looking forward to seeing him opposite Mssr Craig :)

ETA: Because I've had someone not know who Ben Whishaw is I point you towards this pic. He's the one on the left. Obviously.

I am once more back in fair England having seen whales, bears and bald eagles in stunning Canada. Jet-lag is already becoming an issue BUT I have new eps of Merlin to buoy me up for a few more hours.

I have also returned to find myself the owner of a fuzzy, top hatted spider! Thank you [livejournal.com profile] literati! :)

Tonight was episode 3.

Non-spoiler-y reaction: By god a definite thumbs up. I honestly have no words. No wait, I do. Those red cloaks really are lovely.

Spoiler-y reaction: Look away look away... )

And NOW I have to wait for 2 weeks. Yes, this year I am running away from my birthday to far and distant shores to visit friends. Ah, sunny California, I hear you call to me... Merlin, you and I will be having serious catching-up time upon my return.

FEELINGS!!!

YES I HAVE SEEN EPS 1 & 2 MERLIN.

NO I CANNOT YET SUM UP WHAT I THOUGHT OF IT EXCEPT THAT I HAVE FEELINGS SO MANY MANY FEELINGS.

THE LOVE IS UNDENIABLE. AND EPIC. AND FOREVER. ♥♥♥

Oh show, please keep this standard up. Or possibly don't because I'm not sure how I will survive such glorious slash service on a weekly basis :)

Since coherency has gone for the moment with regards that land of myth and magic I pass on other less flail-inducing but still smile inducing SPN links:
x. One of a Kind - old SPN vid celebrating all the various angelic/demonic/human players of 'Team Free Will' back in its glory day. Embedding behind here... )
x. SPOILERS for ep 6 of SPN S7 - this just sounds like fun :)

ETA: Possibly Merlin spoilers in the comments for eps aired so far :)
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Before you ask: NO - I have not yet seen this week's ep of Merlin. Spoil me in any way and I will hunt you down and end you *beams*

Things achieved this week:
x. Finally read Warhorse by Michael Morpurgo. It's actually surprisingly upbeat for a Morpurgo book but I suspect this is down to the subject matter being so grim to begin with. In any case it's a good book, as always tightly written and making you care so much about the characters in just a few pages.
x. Saw this week's ep of Glee. It was a good episode. It was actually at risk of being a great episode before they restored my faith in the show's cheesiness by the most horrendous song choice imaginable. More SPOILER-y reaction... )
x. Watched this week's Supernatural. Hmm. No strong feelings either way, I'm not deathly bored nor over-the-moon excited. Which means I'll tune in next week :) SPOILERS for ep 3... )

And with that! ONWARDS! To iPlayer and Merlin - huzzah!
