It's that time of year where all my TV staples are on a break, and there are more than a few new shows that are starting to catch my eye.

Two in particular: Killjoys and Dark Matter.

In your opinion, are either/both of these any fun/worth watching? Any others I've not mentioned but I would be a fool to miss?

I've been trying to stay away from any spoilers as we approach the season finale, in particular for this one given I had seen from the promos which guest stars we were having.

So, my reactions, in no real order:

1) F**k you, show.

2) My heart. My feelings.

3) Oh, this episode, let me squish it to my bosom and call it my squishy while I drape happy rainbows round my shoulders :)

Obviously don't look at these pics if you want to be entirely spoiler free for the ep, but they are an accurate graphical representation of my feelings on this ep: 'Too precious for this world', aka 'the spin-off waiting to happen'.

Guess who got to see Avengers: Age of Ultron on Thursday. Oh yes, hello smugness my old friend... Thumbs up from me, and of course I'm now already looking forward to the next one :)

Agents of SHIELD also continues to be highly, highly satisfying. SPOILERS for this week's ep... )

As for Supernatural - hah! One of their 'teaser' posters had the supposedly intriguing tagline 'What is Sam prepared to do to save his brother...' My reaction was of course "We literally don't care because there is actually nothing he can do we haven't seen before." All main 3 players have taken turns dying/resurrection, going evil/good, going solo/rejoining the team. Whatever. But I'm still really enjoying this season as good ol' HMS Destiel continues to sail strong and true into the sunset. Regardless of how it all plays out, no-one can convince me that Cas isn't Dean's Collette. Huzzah.

Next on the watch list, Jupiter Ascending...

Daredevil

So I am on episode 12 of 13. I will save the actual finale for later this week. In general - oh, I love this show and its casting of all the characters is just superb.

HOWEVER... (SPOILERS for up to ep 12) )
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
I'm currently enjoying working my way through Daredevil, nothing like extreme well choreographed violence to help you unwind at the end of a tiring day :)

A question for the FL: is anyone watching iZombie? Is it worth giving a shot? (My 'To Watch' list is frankly epic already, but I will admit that for Mssr James, if the show's decent, I'm willing to add another one.)

Onwards!

So, I am alive. Yet again I have survived another work deadline of d00m and am trying to adjust to suddenly having time again for a potential social life.

Obviously the main thing is that, yes, we have our tickets booked for the opening night of Avengers 2 - huzzah! It's amazing the difference a few years/films make. Back in early days of Thor I was the lone voice poking people about a new Marvel flick. Today, I'm the one being swept along in the stampede to book tickets. Excellent stuff :)

Due to various shows ending/going on hiatus I've started watching S1 of Elementary and, no surprise, I absolutely love it. It definitely is its own beast but somehow still feels true in the best way to the original show/books.

Vikings on the other hand. F**k you, Vikings. I don't even watch the dratted thing yet, though it is on the list, but as is the way when you browse Tumblr, I am of course up to date in a very vague sense, which it turned out was enough. I discovered that after all I had a heart in the show when said show decided to destroy it. Where is a cheering new ep of Galavant when you need it...
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Ah, it's been a pleasant couple of weeks in terms of watching/reading material:

Woman in White - a case of me continuing to finally reading the classics I was meant to have read umpteen years ago. Certainly less traumatic than 'Les Mis', though my favourite so far remains 'Call of the Wild'. Still, this was fun and twisty with some Grade A villains and a very satisfactory wrap-up at the end.

Galavant - utter utter musical crack that I know I shouldn't enjoy as much as I do, but I have enjoyed Season 1 immensely, it has hands down my favourite jousting scene and best reason given by the hero as to why his team rocks ("We're gorgeous! And incredibly diverse!").

Agent Carter - ah, Peggy, you wonderful woman you :) Plus of course the thrill of finally meeting Jarvis in the flesh. And a nice plot to help keep the tensions high. I believe this is meant to be a one-off 8-ep mini series (same as for 'Galavant'), but I hope I'm wrong and we get an S2.

Supernatural - this is basically now EastEnders with less a less imaginative wardrobe, but I'm still thoroughly enjoying this. We're actually getting to keep some of our guest stars which is brilliant. And of course Castiel and Crowley and their mountain of personal baggage make for an entertaining, Good Omens-ish vibe.

How do you solve a problem like Loki - I don't read the comics, but then again I don't watch 'Game of Thrones' either, yet oddly enough if you browse Tumblr it's amazing how up-to-date you find yourself when they're brought up in conversation. So, I was gutted at what happened to Kid!Loki, and I wibbled when new Teen!Loki told Thor so many many things when he was compelled to only speak the truth, and yes, my heart was shredded when finally, inevitably, Thor found out and we got that scene. That said, if you need a pick-me-up, just read the comments that followed, in particular the long thread of confusion as someone attempts to summarise and simplify just why we have all the various Lokis currently floating around.

In short, t'is a good time to be a nerd, the pickings are good. Even the sporting world briefly blipped across my radar when I saw the Novak won his final, aww, good for you, old sport :)
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
I am rapidly learning that when it comes to Marvel and their comics, the 'canon' events frankly put the most imaginative fanfic ideas to shame.

In other words, yes, there is now officially such a thing as unicorn!Loki.

As one of the commentators points out, you have to love how the people around him just don't bat an eyelid :)

Somehow, during Season 9, one of my old uni friends had her eye caught by Misha/Castiel. The result was her watching the Cas eps from the end of S8, all his eps (plus a few I deemed plot-essential) in S9, and me promising I wouldn't watch S10 without her.

This weekend, we finally settled down for said promised catch-up. Admittedly eps 1-2 passed in a haze of wine, but the remaining 3 we saw in the cold light of sobriety.

Non-spoiler-y: general thumbs up.

Spoiler-y: Read more... )
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Finally this weekend I got to the end of reading Les Misérables.

And can I just say that if I ever have the honour and privilege of meeting Victor Hugo, my first action will be to punch him in the face and the next will be scream at him "GET A F**KING BETA!"

Good god but that man could waffle...
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Well, I care not! I will still briefly flail and mibble about what is frankly Hollyoaks drama with some fabulous outfits and Maggie Smith :)

SPOILERS for this week's ep... )

So, as far as shows go so far: I've yet to watch an ep of SPN. I suspect I'll wind up watching these in batches so I can skim over the filler eps. Sleepy Hollow is so-so - I love the individual characters, but frankly when I get back from work I am absolutely shattered and each ep is just that tiny bit too long for easy watching. Which leaves, steaming ahead of the pack, SHIELD. Ah my daft, colourful, wonderful show. I properly love all of your characters, and I just hope this pace keeps up for the rest of the season :)
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
... that I am loving so far the new season of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD :) Definitely worth the wait, and, though I know it's early days, I am also adoring the new additions to the cast. I mean, look at them, being all adorable, bad-ass and wonderful! Bring on the angst which I'm sure is just around the corner, and I can even look forward to this year's hiatus since apparently they'll plug that gap with new Agent Carter. Hah! BRING IT!!
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
I am currently at that happy pivot in time where all my favourite shows have just returned or are about to. Yes, I am once more preparing to fill up my evenings with new Agents of SHIELD, Sleep Hollow, Supernatural, and of course the ever epic Downton Abbey.

However, some other shows are potentially catching my eye. So dear FL, in your wise opinion, are any/all of these shows worth a gander?

x. Forever - because honestly I haven't seen this guy since Hornblower and 102 Dalmatians.
x. Intruders - not gonna lie, it's James Frain who's caught my eye since I've still not forgiven him for his Thomas Cromwell stealing my heart in The Tudors.
x. Legends - aka let's see how long Sharpe can last this time before dying in some memorable fashion.

Any 'Aye!s' for these, any 'NAY!!'s?

I found out by text that one Bradley James was the latest participant in the ALS ice bucket challenge. The fact I found out that way rather than being blinded by inescapable gifs as far as the eye can see only shows how fandom's standards are slipping, tsk tsk. So in case anyone else missed it:

Bradley James does it to music.

He nominated Katie McGrath, and she decided to do it with a friend :)

Oh to have been a fly on the wall of HMV as the parents argued in the aisle. The mother wanted to buy Lincoln and the father fought her tooth and nail. As he later explained it to me:

Dad: I was saying 'NO!! Absolutely not! I saw this on the plane and it's rubbish! it's terrible. HOW DID IT WIN AN OSCAR. It's full of vampires and werewolves-

LB: Right. So all this time and you hadn't realised until this point that Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Lincoln aren't actually the same movie?

Dad: *looks sheepish*

I do love my parents :)

Ah, [livejournal.com profile] esmerelda_t and I were just the other day mourning where had all the good fanvids gone. I'm sure they're out there somewhere, but since they moved off LJ I'm been rather useless at hunting them down.

Anyway!

Those of you still in the mood for many minutes of music vid nerdiness, I recommend browsing [livejournal.com profile] gwyn_r and their vid tag. In particular the two recent Pacific Rim vids are an utter joy if you loved the film, and 'How You Like Me Now' will remind you all over again why Tony Stark/Iron Many remains one of the coolest kids on the block :)

Managed to extricate myself from work in time to watch the end of the Wimbledon rerun on the Beeb. Even knowing the ending didn't particularly help - crikey that was a tense match. Two very deserving champs, was lovely to see the respect they showed each other over the final result. By the time it came to them giving their final speeches, Roger was in tears, Novak was in tears, I was in tears. This is why I couldn't ever follow sports all year round, it would just destroy me.

Anyway, well played, gents, and thank you, it's been emotional.

Urgh, so yet again it's that time of year with a major major deadline looming. Sleep? Tchah! Who needs sleep...

Though I rarely watch football, I will admit that I've found myself keeping a weather eye on this year's World Cup. Mainly because at the beginning at least, it was nice coming home after work and still being able to catch the end of the last game. Alas, poor England, but no real surprises there. Still, the other games have been entertaining, so rock on to the final :)

I've also been keeping an eye good ol' Wimbledon. At the start I thought maybe we'll get another Djokovic/Murray final, but of course that all came to a rather abrupt stop. Again I rarely watch tennis, but I did watch last year, and I have a soft spot now for Djokovic after his Grade A grace in losing that final and being so complimentary to Murray and his supporters. And this year I did spy the report of his "amazing piece of sportsmanship", so yes, I would be happy to see him Wimbledon champion this year.

That said.

Federer. Hmm. I suspect it will be him crowned later today, and fair play to him, from what I can see he's been on top top form so far. And it tickles me to know that he's been giving advice to Novak about how to handle fatherhood while on on tour.

So all in all, yes, looking forward to this final. Two very deserving gentlemen, good luck, sirs, I'll be sorry to see either of you lose.
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
So, unspoilery reaction to the finale: it was fun and solid.

The big question, though, was were the writers being realistic when they said it would be a situation we've never been in before?

Answer: SPOILERS, obviously :) )
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Right. So this is it before another long summer break. Our teaser from the makers has been that the lads will be put in 'a situation they've never faced before.'

I love that everyone's first two guesses were therefore: 'Happiness? Alive?'

Ah well, let's see how far off the mark we all were. See you on the far side :)
