So, unspoilery reaction to the finale: it was fun and solid.
The big question, though, was were the writers being realistic when they said it would be a situation we've never been in before?
Answer: Well, personally, and unsurprisingly, I'm going to go with 'No.'
I've lost count of the number of times these 3 have died, it's like waiting for the next bus to come by. They'll die. They'll come back with a few plot heavy eps and a shed load of filler ones along the way.
Demon!Dean? Well, again. I've seen Sam's eyes go black. I've seen him generally go nuts on demon blood. I've seen Dean become a vamp and get all depressed and dark countless times. Oh yes, and of course I've seen him die a few times too.
And I haven't even watched all 9 seasons.
BUT! But but but...
I may possibly have to if not eat my hat, at least nibble warily on its brim. Because while I'm still not utterly convinced we'll ever get endgame Dean/Cas, I'm am currently slightly doubting myself. Because at the very least, we are getting it addressed seriously, i.e. not just the funny winks and nods and Gabriel calling Cas Dean's boytoy (which incidentally I fully enjoyed, so show please don't stop that either).
I honestly thought last ep was effectively the closest we'd ever get to a 'canon' Destiel moment with Metatron's comment about humanity. And with Dean seeing Cas lose his army "for one guy" and then acknowledge and accept that as it was, with a brief sitdown chat and a wry smile.
Except no. No no. I was slightly pole-axed when Metatron made it absolutely clear that he had been writing a story of love, and that yes everything Cas had done was for Dean. And no jokes in response, so snide remarks, no denials. That scene was played straight as the villain gleefully telling the heartbroken protagonist that their love is dead.
And given that we've heard yet again about how Cain was able to put down the First Blade, and we know why (cue Princess Bride-esque cry: 'Trruuuueee lloooooovvve'), I can hear the fanfics starting now about how Cas will be Dean's Collette.
At the very least, the moment Cas finds out what has happened, you can be sure that he will be on the warpath. Sam at least knows now how to resoul a demon, so that part should be fine when they finally pin Dean down. Which just leaves the matter of the mark itself - and that's where I'm sure having an angel with a mission will be very helpful.
Ah, SPN. What have you done to me. How did I get to this point. *sigh*
Right, onwards to the hiatus, and let the epic fanfics begin... :)
