Because I am wonderful ditherer when it comes to any decision...

I think I might be leaning towards a Canon IXUS 85IS camera, since it's time I went digital, and it's small, which is good, and it's shiny, I think...

Anyone got any sage words of warning against this before I screw up my courage and actually buy the dratted thing?

Taking a quick break from the FL exploding over the 11th Doctor news, let me helpfully inform you, dear FL, that New Year's eve chez LB was great fun. Thank you [livejournal.com profile] princess_s for being generally all round made of win :) There were friends old and new, plentiful drinks, games, music, dancing and of course fireworks courtesy of the local pub. Good stuff.

There was also the obligatory time out to inspect Merlin yet again. PS and I have decided that our official mantra for this show is 'We're going to hell', and Colin Morgan, though utterly lovely, is most definitely demon child *pets* Passing on some more vid recs that entertained during the twilight hours:

Something in the Wind - nicely done, if rather sad, vid to a cover of Sally's song from Nightmare Before Christmas. Basically it sucks to be in love with Arthur if you're not Merlin, because up against that you really don't have much of a chance.
The Adventures of Arthur (prince) and Merlin (boy wizard) - done to Stuck in the Middle with You. Silly and fun, a fluffy, harmless look at how the boys work together.
Night at the Opera - not so much a vid as a 'taster' or 'sampler' vid. The argument is the someone needs to fanvid Merlin to a Queen song, and the argument is made with a series of snippets of songs for various characters that include some priceless moments.
If You Were Gay - I think every fandom has at least one version of this, but this is the first I've seen for Merlin. Not the most skilled, smooth job, but the matching of expressions to parts of the lyrics are just too perfect for this not to be fun.
So Macho - shameless Bradley James fanvid, drawing from all his TV roles so far (warning: yes, this does include that scene from Dis/Connected). If you think he's pretty and would just like to relax for a few minutes, this will do the trick :)

And finally: I am still happily excited about the next Doctor. The first promo pics are looking good.

Quick reaction as I have to run help make supper.

No idea who he is, never seen any of his stuff. But from the interview? Definite thumbs up from me, this could be good :)

So that was Christmas. Love my family as always even if, as always, they leave me wiped out. In any case it's back to work tomorrow - oh joy - wherein I shall try to be full of festive cheer and general optimism. Something I am, so I'm told, rather good at. Anyone who knows me will understand why I find it slightly alarming that I'm considered the optimist of our group.

I've been told to look into a digital camera. My knowledge of digital cameras is rather minimal, at the moment I'm guessing that optical zoom is good, as is more than 6 megapixels, and a good battery life (I'm looking at the small compact ones). Any other pointers or recs/warnings would be much appreciated!

Finally, I've been keeping my spirits up with Drastically Redefining Protocol, a Merlin AU WIP. Suffice to say the latest part included mention of the Delicious bookmark 'Prince Arthur/Merlin comment thread: It’s not RPS if it’s REAL', of course it's perfect post-Christmas fare :)

Since I fail at Christmas cards etc, I'm passing around a few vaguely festive tunes. On the whole they're folky but hey, they make me tap the foot :)

Mostly folk, sound your instruments of joy... )

And with that I bid everyone a very happy Christmas, and if it's not your festival, ah well, you're still getting my best wishes anyway :) See you on the other side of the Christmas pudding!

Spent a pleasant chunk of the weekend with [livejournal.com profile] princess_s wherein we duly watched the Merlin finale and proceeded to spend alarming amounts of time talking disturbingly large quantities of meta about the whole series. At what point exactly did Merlin become a show that required meta? In any case, I miss it already *sniffle*

One thing I can't forgive the show for is making me really care that ultimately the story of Merlin and Arthur is a bit of a tragic one. I can't remember exactly what happens to Merlin but he does vanish one way or another, and Camelot ends, and Arthur of course is very famous for tragically dying in his prime (after feeling generally betrayed and let down by Lancelot and Gwenivere). The characters have always been legendary/heroes/etc for me since childhood, but... but... well, the final ending has a new sting now.

To that end! Have some vid recs.

Red by [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24: basically what I just said above. Arthur, Gwen, Merlin, Lancelot - all tragedies about happen.
The Choice by [livejournal.com profile] nel_ani: nice little instrumental to go with The Beginning of the End and Merlin's final decision.
And moving away from angst with a vengeance...
The Bitch Prince by [livejournal.com profile] wistful_fever. Yep it's THAT song we all sang along to back at school. And god but it does actually suit Arthur to a T. He may be a royal prat and a half at time, but he wouldn't have it any different and neither would Merlin. Aww.

Yes I have seen the preview for next's week final ep. Yes I am mildly eating myself whilst trying to think up of just how it's going to end. I have a theory, obviously, but for now I'm contenting myself with cancelling all appointments for Saturday evening (which mainly consisted of writing Christmas cards but pffft). My one completely unrelated thought that I'm cutting anyway in case the implication could be seen as SPOILER-y... )

Ending on two truly deep, profound contemplations on the show.
x. Is it me or are Arthur's trousers getting tighter? It does seem like the wardrobe are going out of their way to keep him in short jackets and tops rather than the longer cloaks and coats he used to favour at the beginning of the series. I mean look at that shirt - surely that's just borderline impractical, not to mention cold, when you're out tramping through the forest hunting or whatever you have your sword out for.
x. Okay, not to do with the show, but I finally saw that clip of Bradley James attempting to cook on Something For the Weekend. I feel happy laughing at the general incompetence because I am quite happy to admit that he's still a better cook than me in that he can at least break an egg without losing half the shell to the mix, and yay! I am not the only soul who can muck up whisking :)
x. ETA: Ah, the glory of fame and the red carpet. Yes it's only 1 second of the first 24, but Colin Morgan getting 'recognised' by some journalist also made me smile.

I don't have a digital camera, just an old-fashioned film contraption and one of those CDs where they scan in your photos. Still, it's better than nothing and it's nice having them online in some form so I can reminisce :) The full text/story of the trip to Refugios Amazonas is here.

A few pics of the Amazon rainforest... )

I'm settling nicely back into life in the UK, a state achieved by ignoring the fact it's December already and I haven't even started thinking about Christmas shopping *shudders*

On the bright side! I am now fully caught up with Merlin. Oh show, you adorable fluffy thing you. Even if you keep trying to go dark and dragging your lovely characters through the metaphorical mud. And only two episodes left! What am I going to do when this is over? No SJA, no Torchwood, no Merlin, WHAT WILL I DO?!

Speaking of - Sarah Jane Adventures. I can't tell if it's just I'm back in the right frame of mind, but it does feel like the series has finally kicked-off properly (though I'm afraid I'm still really not sold on Rani). Though, for the record, going straight from 3 eps of Merlin to several eps SJA and the wonderful Clyde/Luke friendship will all but kill you. The same innocence, the same trust, the same way they'd all happily die for the other. *happy sigh*

In conclusion, I also finally saw that vid of Bradley James and Colin Morgan attempting to catch a spider in the bath. Oh boys, please don't change :)
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
I have to say that vids like this one are really not helping with any highly inappropriate slight crush I might have on one Bradley James. Though watching him and Colin Morgan cheerfully chant 'We're going to die' as they face up to the next rollercoaster is awesome, as is watchin ASH just laughing at the lot of them. (Oh, and apparently Bradley has all the BtVS boxsets, ♥♥♥)

On another tack entirely - OW. Last gift from the family turns out to have been the ever faithful travelling companion: Food Poisoning. Which sucks just a bit as I'm meant to be finishing some last-minute shopping for the gringo family and quite frankly fat chance now. I'm going to retreat and make some more sugared tea.

ETA: MWHAHAHAHAHA! Oh, I knew bad pics of these boys had to exist somewhere. Bradley is positively skinny and looks like someone trying to go cold-turkey from god-knows-what, and the sideburns and moustache do vaguely make Colin remind me of a Mexican pimp... I love this show :)
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
My world is so full of sunsets and rainbows and kittens frolicking in the fields right now. Oh Merlin, you have the most awesome cast ever and damn but they know how to give good fanservice :) Plus! it's all for charity, so I can genuinely say it was all for a good cause, hurrah! In case anyone hasn't yet seen these:

Children in Need: Merlin sketch - Colin Morgan and ASH are just ♥♥♥ You can also snag the vid here.
2 more Children in Need Merlin pics - the cuteness in these pics defies belief :)
Children in Need: Doctor Who snippet - opening 2 minutes from the Christmas special. I'd forgotten how much I am actually looking forward to seeing this.
And finally... Alexis Denisof and Alyson Hannigan, with baby bump and doggy, awwwwwww :)
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Yes this is still me sticking my head in the sand, don't worry I am actually about to vanish properly in a day or so. In the meantime however... oh I love this show, more specifically I love this cast. My fannish heart swells and my world is currently draped with fandom rainbows :)

x. VID: BBC Points of View: Behind the Scenes of Merlin - ASH is awesome as always and made me laugh, the boys were lovely, and it was great to finally hear something from the girls (Katie McGrath continues to be unbelivably gorgeous, seriously, dude). Also I'm coming to the amusing conclusion that Arthur may be a bit of short-arse, he definitely looks shorter than Merlin, heh. In conclusion, oh ASH, you are the man.
x. PICS: Merlin Cast Support Children in Need - The pic of Morgan, ASH and Pudsey may be one of the most adorable pics I've seen in a while. There've already been some great icons made here.

Have successfully survived my first trip to the Amazon rainforest, spending a few days close to the banks of the Tambopata river. Definitely a trip I'd recommend to one and all.

Skipping behind a cut in case I start to ramble too much... )

Anyway, that's pretty much it now for my planned excursions into Peru. Next stop should be with the family and I'm not sure what they'll be wanting to do.

Of course, I took full advantage of my brief reunion with full internet access to catch up with Merlin. Ah Merlin. I've said in the past, and I to some extent stick to it, that one reason I like this show is that it's fun, light-hearted, and, very importantly, doesn't take itself too seriously, there is no supposedly 'deep' angst. What happened this week, as I suspected it might, was that you became accutely aware of what really great actors can do with even a nice, light script. ASH, McGrath and Morgan were fantastic this ep, which in their hands became, for me, one of the darkest and most interesting eps of the series so far. I never thought I'd be able to do meta for this show, and I'm not going to start just now as I'm knackered, but oh there is so much meta to be had out of this ep for all their characters. For now I will simply re-iterate something I said previously after the last ep. Cut for ep SPOILERS... )

Am off visiting land of my fathers for the next three weeks. If anyone notices my absence, that will be why.

Please do not spoil me for Merlin unless it´s just to reassure me that I´m not imagining the slash and/or that various characters are looking particularly lovely.

Ditto SJA.

See folks on the far side :)
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
And you learn something new every day. Though I have a sneaking suspicion that yet again I am the last one to realise something everyone else picked up on weeks ago. In my defence, I've never watched The Catherine Tate Show, so there was no real reason I should have watched the Christmas special. But there you have to thank YouTube for providing the distinctly memorable sight of Merlin (Colin Morgan) being slightly non-plussed when he finds himself holding an edible penis.

I now consider myself dutifully updated. (Though, oh my god, the hair! *pets*)

Another thing I hadn't realised was just how much of a mark Morgan had made on theatre before he finally settled for Merlin. Sounds like he really caused a stir with Vernon God Little (his debut) and All About My Mother, and whilst Prayer For My Daughter may not have gone down so well it does read like he impressed a lot of critics with all his performances. I wonder if any theater-goers are disappointed that he's relocated to TV for a while, in any case I can imagine some BBC folks feeling pretty damn chuffed when he agreed to join the cast.

Oh, and apparently one of his dream roles would be Mort. Yep, he's a Pratchett fan. Have I mentioned that the Merlin cast are adorable? ♥

Well that was surprisingly het. Also not as traumatising as I'd feared given that I still have Dis/Connected in my mind's eye. And ooh - is that character development I spy?

SPOILERS for ep... )
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Yep, sorry, it's more Merlin-related waffle.

1) For those who weren't able to make London Expo, there are two Q&As available to listen to online from the event. You can even download one of them! Have a listen here.

2) If I have to be traumatised, I don't see why the rest of you shouldn't be. If you haven't seen Dis/Connected and are a fan of Merlin, then it's well worth digging out the brain bleach and giving this one a go. It's not actually bad, basically seems like the BBC3 answer to Skins, but dear god I cannot now look at Arthur again in the same way. Ever. There is also a bonus appearance from Clyde (Sarah Jane Adventures) who gets to play the hard man, but with a slight twist in the tale at the end.
Pics from 'Dis/Connected' this way (small SPOILERS)... )

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] princess_s requested a few other screencaps. Which I only am providing because I am the world's best friend and because I am expecting her to cover the therapy bills. Wrong wrong wrong, just so very very wrong... )
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Just a few pics from the London Expo. These are mainly so I can come back and bask in the memories more than anything else since there are photos of far superior quality on LJ in various other reports.

Spooks

Oct. 27th, 2008 10:03 pm
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Okay. So did not see that one coming.

Anyone else tuning in in half an hour to see what happens next? *set clock*

ETA: So my deep, profound thoughts on the new series of Spooks thus far: If ever there was a man born to ponce around in a Spooks-esque black coat whilst the camera slow-mos and the techno soundbeat lets rip, it's Richard Armitage. Yis.
lonelybrit: Apples & book (Default)
Ah Alexis Denisof, wherefore art thou Alexis Denisof...

It seems he is actually still somewhere on the face of the planet. Not only are he and Alyson expecting their first child (finally, they took their time), but he is actually going to appear on TV. As in, a real actual TV show. He may appear on screens and be seen to utter real actual words. DUDE. Admittedly it's only a guest-star one-off spot, but still, I feel this moment should be noted nevertheless.

In other news, there are many adjectives that should not be used when trying to describe any aspect of the next episode of Merlin. 'Throbbing' is most definitely one of them. Yes I do have the sense of humour of a 12 year old. Thank you Digital Spy for that :)

And finally - only 40 mins till new Spooks! With Richard Armitage! I need to learn how to give these exclamation marks a break...
