Because I am wonderful ditherer when it comes to any decision...

I think I might be leaning towards a Canon IXUS 85IS camera, since it's time I went digital, and it's small, which is good, and it's shiny, I think...

Anyone got any sage words of warning against this before I screw up my courage and actually buy the dratted thing?

As always, I would suggest that you find a store that stocks it and actually hold the thing. I've changed my mind on what camera I'm going to buy just on that. No point getting something you aren't comfortable holding :)

I have the 850IS and am very pleased with its performance.

But yeah, either go into the camera shop and ask them to take photos with it, or go to an online camera comparing site where you can pit it against all the shiny models. They have sample photos so you can have an idea of what its capabilities are.
