ETA: So my deep, profound thoughts on the new series of Spooks thus far: If ever there was a man born to ponce around in a Spooks-esque black coat whilst the camera slow-mos and the techno soundbeat lets rip, it's Richard Armitage. Yis.

Will you maybe be able to catch it in BBC iPlayer, do they do the BBC3 stuff?

And we thought Joss and Torchwood were tough on their cast, Spooks still manages to trump them all!

All of a sudden Torchwood seems positively fluffy towards its characters, at least it tends to wait until the finale before pulling a stunt like that. Even Joss seems positively magnanimous towards his characters in what the Spooks crowd sometimes go through!

If you want me to give you a basic rundown on what happened in the series just before this one I can (which is actually where I started watching regularly)? But that aside, I'd say the main thing is not to spoil yourself for this series at all. At least not yet. Which as we're only two eps in isn't too hard.

So the main regulars last series were Adam, the blonde lady Ros, the other blonde lady Jo, techie Malcolm. (There was also Zach but he exited early on. Connie was a former spook who was re-recruited out of retirement towards the end of last series). Adam's wife was apparently killed during some previous series, and he sent his son away (boarding school maybe?) to protect him. He had a brief affair with Ros that stopped when work/episodes kept them too busy, plus he starting having another affair with a foreign ambassador's wife in order to get info.

Ros was recruited as a mole by some shadow-y super!uber!spy international network who convinced her it was for 'the greater good' of the UK. Of course they were rotters, but she realised a bit too late. It wound up with the super!uber!spy network killing her, only for the death to be revealed as a trick by MI5 and Adam to save her. Turns out she and Adam really were in love, but work sucks like that. Ros 'disappeared' into the horizon.

In another side story, Jo had a fling with a tall black journalist (Ben). He found out she was a spook, and although they broke up he did wind up being recruited into MI5 and is now a regular.

In the finale, Jo and Adam were kidnapped by some mercenaries who were notorious for taking out top spies. Jo was raped and knew she was going to be tortured to death by the guards in order to make her give up information on fellow agents. Rescue was looking unlikely (no-one had been rescued in the past) so she asked Adam to kill her to save both her and the others. The finale ended with MI5 bursting in to the rescue and us seeing Adam with an apparently limp and unresponsive Jo in his arms. *cue dramatic music*

Spooks is definitely the show where, unless you're a masochist who loves the thrill of constant uncertainty, it's really not worth picking up a 'favourite' character or getting too fond of anyone. It's never going to end well...

I know. I liked Danny. And the computer guy. What a horrible ending. Luckily Tom survived his death. Didn't he? At least, where I left off. Heheh, I'm just watching second ep of Little Britain in America. Apparently David Walliams is yet another Englishman who does a really good American accent. I wonder how it's going over in the States. It's such a British sense of humour and nothing like Monty Python which did become very popular.
