Give me strength...
May. 1st, 2013 12:26 amBecause I adore Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Derek Jacobi I'm attempting to watch the first ep of their new comedy, Vicious.
15-minutes in and I'm having to pause before going on. I suspect this may fall into the 'Labour of Love' category of TV. Has anyone else watched this? Am I missing something? Hmm, let's see how things are going by the time credits roll...

Rec me a book!
Apr. 3rd, 2013 02:38 amI have a couple of long haul flights in the very near future and am looking to arm myself suitably with reading materials.
Thus far I have Wolf Hall, Bringing Up the Bodies, Cloud Atlas, and a couple of Kate Atkinsons to keep me going. However, I would love to have a few more.
So, dear FL, can you rec me some good reads please? In particular I'd love some lighter chapters for when I'm jetlagged, in the past I'd have gone for some Jeeves & Wooster or a Gerald Durrell, but alas I've managed to go through all of those.
So. Any recs?

So, you know that scene in How to Train Your Dragon where Toothless finds the equivalent of catnip for dragons and is all purring and being inappropriate with the grass? Well that was basically me and this ep by the time the credits rolled.
( SPOILERS for the ep, and of course 'unicorns'... )
So, now we wait for the next ep. Is it back to being next week or is there another wait? In any case, I will be here, SPN, when you are ready to return.

And then there's this b*****d...
Mar. 14th, 2013 08:26 pmSo apparently Tom Hiddleston won some award at The South Bank Sky Arts Awards. And now Tumblr is covered with gifs of him singing "Your thighs and buttocks are so holdable..."
I'm guessing that this can be explained by the fact that the award was presented by Tim Minchin. At least I hope it is as for someone who is utterly clueless, these are not the best lyrics to browse into with no warning :)

Things I never knew I needed in my life
Mar. 7th, 2013 12:01 amI was recently introduced to the randomness that is the 'Harlem Shake' wave on YouTube. It is scarily easy to lose minutes of your life watching firemen morph into chicken and so on.
And now the Supernatural cast and crew have added their own contribution to the masses. ( Also embedding here... )
Finally, the creator of The Hour has given us a little idea of what a third series might have looked like. Though I suppose the main thing is she does answer the main 'cliffhanger' question that flattened us at the end of S2.

Noooooooooo
Feb. 13th, 2013 08:11 pmWhy did no-one point this out to me.
Seems the BBC will not commission a third series of The Hour.
I will go weep silently into my butternut squash and parsnip soup. Freddie. Bel. Hector. Randall. Lix. The soaring Marnie. And oh Freddie...

A batcave!!
Feb. 8th, 2013 12:24 amAm preparing to climb the wooden hill. Not looking forward to it as I'm waking tomorrow morning to what is going to be a miserable day at work. Well, the morning anyway. Next time I will read the small print as I'm sure I don't remember signing up to be canon fodder. Ah well.
Things that are keeping me cheerful though!
x. SPN - this season has really sucked me in. And the latest ep (batcave!) left me happily flailing and clapping like a well-fed seal.Props to the writers for somehow, SOMEHOW, managing to create a world where potentially there could be a happy ending for the Winchesters. With their bat-cave. And Dean out hunting as he loves. And Sam being the book person back home as he loves. And all their minions and friends *cough*Cas*cough around them. I mean yes, I'm sure this bubble will be promptly popped next ep, but for one ep, this ep, we can dream :)
x. Cabin Pressure - I've finally caught-up on this radio comedy, the 4th series is currently airing, last ep due next week. And I am LOVING it. Wonderful writing and a brilliant cast bringing it all to life. I will be channelling its Arthur tomorrow morning as I face down the canons, one cannot truly shoot down the ridiculously eternally optimistic.
x. Mr Selfridge - can't quite put my finger on why I'm enjoying this so much, but I really am. Again, a spot-on cast is keeping my interest every week, kudos :)
That and the news that Colin Morgan will be play Ariel in The Tempest this summer will leave me with plenty of happy of thoughts to see me through the night.

I suspect this was the night a thousand RPS ships, I mean fics, sailed :) Various reactions being posted on the usual Twitter/Facebook/Tumblr etc, but for the mo this one is my fav. T'is a nice sentiment :)
Instant 'Hollow Crown' vid rec
Jan. 21st, 2013 12:22 amFinal post before I ascend the proverbial wooden hill.
Somewhere a Clock is Ticking by anonymous over at
fv_poster for the BBC's Shakespearean The Hollow Crown.
Just a beautiful, beautiful vid showing how the tales of all 3 kings remained connected from beginning to end. There are some lovely parts in particular showing how even after his death, Richard continued to haunt his successor/deposer Henry. Definitely worth a watch.

National Television Awards
Jan. 20th, 2013 01:14 amThe Merlin cast have been tweeting about this and you can't go far in Tumblr before you get a reminder from the fans. So here is me doing my bit.

Vote - The National Television Awards
So Merlin has officially come to an end. And they've ended with the show nominated in the 'Drama' category, and Colin Morgan nominated in 'Drama Performance: Male'. It would be a lovely swan song for the cast and crew as I imagine that (in the UK anyway) this will be one of the last times we have them all putting on their posh frocks and stepping out together.
In summary, to quote the once and future King himself: "I would encourage votes for 'Colin Morgan' & 'Merlin' but the choice is yours... "

Or perhaps to be a bit more specific: who here doesn't mind being potentially spoiled with regards to Loki and Thor 2?
Just spotted this charmingly titled link in my wanderings: Major Loki Spoilers Revealed In Thor 2 By Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje & Kurse
The thing is, there's 'major' as in "Did you know Mordred comes back this series?", and then there's major as in Shawshank Redemption/The Usual Suspects ending spoiler-y. I don't mind the odd, obvious plot point, but not the point of the entire arc :)
In any case, if anyone fancies having a poke at the link, feel free to let me know if I can risk it!
ETA: Ah, true friendship is taking a potential spoiler on the chin so your pal doesn't have to. Thank you,
esmerelda_t! And to anyone else wondering - t'is a good 'un, I wouldn't call it 'major' given that half of it is speculation on the interviewer's part. And the rest isn't really unexpected :)

First thoughts of 2013
Jan. 6th, 2013 01:43 am1) Nope, I am still not entirely over that Merlin finale. I am not currently on Tumblr, something I am grateful for as at the moment there seem to be a couple of folks just falling in love with the show. As in starting from S1. The times of innocence and slash dragons and unicorns. I almost feel I should warn them...
2) I have rediscovered the joy of a beautifully written book. I had a 4-hr round train trip today and am now on page 160 of 'The Song of Achilles'. To be fair I did mainly choose it because it was the only one on my 'To Read' pile that was small enough to fit in the bag. In hindsight, beautiful though the words are, possibly reading a tale of Achilles and Patroclus so soon after Camlann might not be the most carthetic of choices. Ah well.

Merlin finale
Dec. 25th, 2012 12:14 amI have many feelings right now, but in short I'm tempted to give it 10/10.
1) Their love is epic. And forever.
2) There really is only one appropriate response right now. Watch this vid, raise your lighter, and drink a toast to the show of unicorns and rat stew.
And if this vid doesn't give you future reunion/reincarnation/fixit/whatever fic feels, there's no hope for you :)

Dec. 23rd, 2012 09:42 pmHmm.
So I was this close to saying that the latest ep wasn't as traumatic as I was fearing. But then I caught the end of the re-run on BBC3. And then it hit me again that in less than 24-hours time the whole thing will be over.
There's no way the writers can keep everyone happy and wrap everything up in 45 minutes. Is there. Is there?
Meep.
There will most definitely be mulled wine quaffing going on this Christmas Eve...

"Morning, Merlin fans!"
Dec. 20th, 2012 11:21 pmBefore we get steam-rollered by the finale starting this weekend, this vid is a well-timed, perfectly judged trip down memory lane as we get ready to bid 'adieu' to the Merlin cast and crew.

To steal a quote: It's been emotional.

One of the best series on television this year, if not the best.
Yes I have just watched this series finale. There was honestly not a single weak link in any of the characters by the end. Oh my heart.
Apparently no solid word on if there'll be a third series. The screenwriter Abi Morgan has said she would love to do a S3, so we'll just have to see which way the BBC decides to go.
Until then, I'm going to sit here and drown in my many many feelings on that last ep...
