Along with having to move down south for the new job, I have to finally look into getting myself my own desktop PC. At the moment I'm looking at Dell simply because the mother got her computer from there and it isn't completely pants and frankly I'm not too impressed by PC World.

Still. Can anyone rec me or give me a warning off any particular companies as being good/bad for desktops? Any general advice on what I should be wary of or looking for?

I've used Compaqs, HPs, and Dells for PCs. I hate Compaqs as they were too easy to kill. My HP desktop is great and like 6-years-old and still running without serious problems. I used Dells primarily at work as they are cheap. However, I believe most Dells you have to be wary about where you can take it for tech support because Dell sometimes ties you to using them as tech support.

Dells are pretty good machines. I don't think that they have as long of a shelf life or are meant to last a long time, but they do pretty well. One Dell product I really love is my big ass wide flat screen monitor that I have at work.

Yeah, I would not get Vista. It doesn't have enough security updates to be a viable operation system yet. If I was getting a new machine, I'd be going with XP.
