Hmm. So, usually, there are four operators needed to keep The Oxford Story running nice and smoothly. At least four. Preferably more. At a pinch we can manage with three if things are very, very quiet. As in no more than three visitors every three hours.
Today there were only two operators, one of whom was me - terrified as it was my first day without any help/supervision.
And of course, Saturday turned out to be the busiest day pretty much ever.
It is a strange but oh so true fact, that groups of tourists are drawn to queues. They scent them a block away and converge. At one point it was like a meeting of the United Nations in our small foyer. Russian, Spanish, Japanese, German, Czech, French, American, Canadian and something-utterly-unintelligible-to-a-panicking-LB were all babbling around over that irritating, irritating music tape that runs on a five minute loop non-stop...
*quivers*
Ooh, and I killed the till! Whoot! Thankfully the customer who was waiting was actually a cashier herself and she, thank God, took pity and came to my rescue. I could have kissed her.
And I officially love
eloise_bright. Treachery and men in tights. *happy sigh*

Date: 2004-10-09 04:40 pm (UTC)The work sounds awful, but also fun. This would make interesting Wes drabble - working during his hols at Oxford and not being able to cope - demon langs yes, babbling tourists and muzac no. *hugs you tightly*
There will be no tights. Tunics, yes, 'leather so soft as to be almost suede' tunics, but no tights.

Date: 2004-10-10 02:40 pm (UTC)Work is very fun. Admittedly at times very stressful and with a tendency to make you look longingly at the shiny bottles of Spiced Mead, but fun nevertheless :)
*huggles* No tights. I can live with that. Could be something to do with the soft, soft leather...

Date: 2004-10-10 02:52 pm (UTC)It is an insane place. Very fun and the people there are lovely. And yes, it is rather self-important and too big for its boots. But still, I'm enjoying being there so far :)
**slips you sly smooch on the side**

Date: 2004-10-10 02:57 pm (UTC)The Oxford Story - a 40 minute history of Oxford, the University and the role the two have played in the history of England. Or something like that. :)
It's very expensive, but the ride is fun. If you have money to spare it's well worth the look. Otherwise - stick to the Pitt Rivers museum, it's cheaper and has real human shrunken heads!
