Harumph. I've been trying to fill out application forms but the website's been down all evening. *shakes fist* The more happy events of the day, my housemate responded to my being snappy and cranky by making me a cup of hot Horlicks and us both watching the Brit Awards. Worked a charm.
Franz Ferdinand were up for three awards against folks such as Oasis, Kaiser Chiefs, and Coldplay. Much as I love Ze Franz, I knew the game was up the moment the nominations came in. A guess confirmed when Alex mentioned how he knew they hadn't won since they hadn't been asked to record an acceptance speech (they're on tour in Japan). Which actually made it easier since I could then just enjoy the show.
Kaiser Chiefs... Ah, that was their night. Their first acceptance speech was utterly random and hilarious. They clearly had no idea what to say, and Ricky wound up giving the award and mic to one of the lesser known band members, and then the rest of the group legged it, leaving the poor fellow to say 'Erm, yeah... thanks. Bye!' As the evening progressed and the lads grew progressively more drunk, the speeches became more substantial if a little slurred. (By the end it was obvious they were leaving any talking to whoever had had the least drink.)
Coldplay. I'd forgotten how much I like their music. Their live performance was great and they deserved their awards. Chris Martin made it sound like they were about to take a break (This is the last time you'll be seeing us for a while), which would be a pity though understandable considering how hard they've been working these past few years. My friend and I loved how Chris Martin took an almighty swig from a very large Bailey's bottle before going onstage.
Oasis didn't win anything. Oh. No. Poor. Lambs.
The awards over, I check out LJ, and thus bring you obligatory Franz pic spam.
Technically this pic's of the entire band. (From left to right: Paul, Nick, Alex, Bob):
Thanks to
musiquesas for pic.
Awwwwwww. *squishes Bob* Such a proud moment, his tambourine debut. AWWWWW :)
And finally, because it's been that kind of night, rounding off with a small sharing of music.
Bob Dylan - Tambourine Man
Okay, I lied. This has nothing to do with the Brits, it has to do with Bob. I saw the pic and this song promptly landed in my head and wouldn't leave...
Franz Ferdinand - Next To You
The song behind the pic. A live recording, rather fun. Though bear in mind they wrote it about ten minutes before getting up on stage.
Kaiser Chiefs - Na Na Na Na Naa
Now we're at the Brits. This song is catchy as hell, and you have to love the title.
Arctic Monkeys - Love Machine (cover of Girls Aloud)
For various reasons I'm a little 'meh' about these guys. But I feel no shame in loving this song, since part of what makes it wonderful is how bad the tuning and timing are.
Magic Numbers - Take Me Out (cover of Franz Ferdinand)
These guys were up for nominations but sadly won no awards. Apparently very nice people, they supported Franz for a while on tour. My housemate and Bob really love their album.
Coldplay - Yellow (acoustic)
Simple sweet love song, that is so much better when done acoustic rather than with a whole band.
Franz Ferdinand - The Fallen
When I first started listening to Franz, I was determined to not like this song since it seemed to be about nothing other than 'Yay, destruction!' Now it's one of my favourites of both albums. Great tune, great fun, and there is a little more going on with the lyrics than first meets the eye.
Franz Ferdinand - Missing You
The rumour is that a band member's grandfather had just died when this was written. In any case, it is definitely a love song, but love for a friend/family. Again, very simple and bittersweet. Another one of my favourites.

Date: 2006-02-16 11:24 pm (UTC)That's a shame to hear about Coldplay, but I don't half blame them. Life must be strange living in a goldfish bowl.
Do you know I was thinking Mr Tambourine Man before I saw the link?
Thanks so much for all that wonderful music ::loves on you liek woah:: Apart from all the great FF tracks, thanks especially for the Arcitic Monkeys as I couldn't access the song the last time you posted it. Although I'm curious as to why you're meh about them...?

Date: 2006-02-17 06:02 pm (UTC)Ah, a rather petty reason and probably completely misguided, but at this point I need any reason to try and whittle down the number of new bands I need to buy the albums of, LOL! A pal of mine has a wee band, and last time Arctic Monkeys were in town my friend's group supported them. Apparently the Monkeys were rather arrogant and cold and not particularly friendly to those behind the curtains, though my friend would be the first to admit they put on a very very good live show.
I'm old fashioned. In my books, good manners cost nothing. It's another reason whilst I enjoy their music, I'm not at all displeased Oasis won no awards. That said, the Arctic Monkeys are very young, so I'll check back in a while and see how they're growing up :)
