Basically a while back I wrote a fluffy NFA-scenario where the true hero of the day was a dragon called Eric. This is just a short drabble written for
slashthedrabble wherein Eric watches.
Fairy Tale
“I didn’t know dragons could get sunburn.”
“Eric is used to the rays of our twin Pylean suns, your Earth star is rather different.”
“Huh,” Connor carefully filed away this latest nugget of information and continued rubbing SPF 30 suncream into the patiently outstretched wing. Eric looked back over a scaly shoulder at him, eyes glittering a rainbow in the dappled light. “Not exactly the stuff of fairy tales, is it?”
A wounded rumble.
“No offence, Eric, you’re lovely. You’d have beaten some inbred prince any day.”
Groo smiled and patted Eric’s nose before returning to his task of applying ointment to the horns. “He is the Prince, Connor, his heart is as pure as molten gold.”
“I can believe that.” He was treated to an affectionate snort that tickled his ears.
Eric stretched so they could reach that prickly ridge between the wing-blades. He did feel like the dragon of storybooks, curled around priceless treasures. Only this trove was flesh and bone and endearing individual quirks. He prided himself on his part in achieving what Connor called a Fairy Tale Ending, Spike called No Bloody Surprise and Angel called None Of Their Business. Wesley tended to just exchange a look with Eric and offer him more noodles. In fact, if Eric tilted his neck just like this he could see into the lobby, where vampire and human were currently bickering about which placemats to use.
Eric sighed happily to himself – a deep rumble that sent the birds twittering – and made a mental note to remind Groo that in half an hour they needed to collect Spike and Gunn from their weekly poetry slam. This done, he availed himself of one of the perks of a perfect photographic memory and began rereading his favourite chapter of Austin’s Pride and Prejudice.

Oh, that made me giggle and melt and want to pet this ficlet till it purred. And they argue about placemats. Such a sweet wonderful little moment in the denial bubble...
