Converting video to digital/avi files?

lonelybritSo here's a question for those of you well versed in these things.
We have an old camcorder and accompanying teeny cassette-thingy with various things recorded on it.
What we want is to by hook or by crook get these burned to a DVD/CD/avi file. Is there any way we can do this at home or are we best going to some professional outfit?
