UK TV package advice please!

So the mother mourns that she often misses TV series due to travel/episodes airing too late. In her head she has visions of her being able to sit down and catch-up on missed TV eps/series or, if she so feels like it, select a film to watch. She also likes the sound of being able to 'record' what's on TV so you can watch it later.

We've had a look at BT Vision so far and Virgin Media (there is cable to our area). As someone who knows sweet FA about these things they look roughly the same to me.

Does anyone have any recommendations/cautionary tales about these packages, or could you recommend another provider?

I don't have any experience of BT, but we're with Virgin in Cambridge, and my mum uses them in Glasgow. I really like their service, we haven't had any problems with them, and their V+ box (which is the one you need to be able to record things, and might be slightly more expensive) is really simple to use - my mum is completely non-experienced when it comes to these things and find is easy to use and absolutely loves it! :)

There's always a degree of sods law involved cause a provider that is good in one area will be rubish in another, but I'd opt for Virgin, remember how long it took BT to connect my internet?

I'm really happy with Virgin Media's one week catchup service. It's like iPlayer with all the other terresterial channels. Plus the more expensive the package, the more shows you can watch on demand like The Sopranos or Supernatural.

To be honest, I'm hooked up to Sky Plus, and I've never had any real trouble with them. They're a bit pricey, but can be negotiated with.
