As the song says, 'In 5 years time...'
Jul. 10th, 2009 12:07 amSo I actually missed tonight's ep. Was out with work colleagues seeing Transformers 2. Got home with plans for a final cuppa tea before bedulating, only to see the various flailing reaction posts on LJ and gave into curiosity and caught up on BBC iPlayer.
Now that was more like it. Plot continues to unravel at a frightening pace, tremendous acting from all (Capaldi has never been finer), some beautiful moments between the characters and some nice development from certain quarters. Tomorrow will have its work cut out to live up to the tension of this episode.
And now to the SPOILERS for ep 4 (and the 'Next time' trailer for ep 5). Naturally it goes without saying I know nothing about ep 5 and I have desire to know anything about ep 5. Not until it's aired.
x. The COBRA meeting. Absolutely chilling how they all turned into making sure their kids were exempt and making excuses for what they were doing. Also chilling how even though you could see Frobisher was appalled he still felt he had no choice but to obey his orders.
x. Lois. Came though nicely. I think definitely TW recruit if she survives.
x. Johnson. So she does have a heart after all. If Jack and Gwen and co can ever forgive her, I wonder if she would be prepared to abandon ship and join with TW to provide more muscle power.
x. Rhys and Gwen. Not much of them, but what there was was beautiful.
x. Rhiannon. Her conversation with Ianto was just so, so well played. (It also for me was pretty much one anvil too far. When someone says 'I love you' at the end of a conversation, we all know what's just around the corner. For similar reasons, my heart is already twinging for the Frobishers.)
x. Ianto. Ianto and Jack. Broke my heart. I liked how although they start the ep with an argument over Jack's secrets, Jack gets the ball rolling again by revealing the existence of Alice and Stephen. I also love that he promised to remember Ianto even after 1000 years, given how long he's lived and is set to live in the future it's pretty much equivalent to telling Ianto 'I love you' and if anything is a little better given how Ianto hasn't been worrying so much about being loved as just what exactly he means to Jack given Jack is immortal.
x. Ianto. Yes he's getting multiple points. His final scene. Pure Torchwood how he was utterly prepared to die in the line of duty as a last ditch attempt to save the children. As he said in the radio play, he's always known that grey hairs are unlikely to be a risk given his job. Part of me wishes he could at least have died achieving something, but at least he wasn't alone and he got the final promise he wanted from Jack.
x. Jack. Barrowman did good this ep. Of course I loved how when faced with the reality that he was about to lose the man who refused to believe he was 'just surface' he utterly panicked to the point of taking every back, even the Doctor's philosophy, if it meant 456 would fix it. But the part the really broke my heart was when he woke up. Last time it was in Ianto's arms, this time only we saw the brief moment of lingering grief that hit when he came back.
x. Clem. He gives me a bit of hope about tomorrow. Because surely there is more to his tale than just he was the one left behind for some inexplicable reason. So hopefully death won't be the end of his tale.
x. Decker (?) The evil!Q in any case. Apparently dead at the end of ep 4... except he is up and about in the ep 5 trailer.
x. Yes I'm still utterly, utterly gutted about the loss of Ianto. I've always known that statistically, logically he is the one with the imminent expiry date given how long his colleagues have lasted. But knowing and knowing are two different things. I am genuinely rather heartbroken that his tale is apparently done. I say apparently because I think I'm going into denial. I think it's not going to sink in until the credits roll tomorrow. Which is a dangerous game as I think I'm just putting off the inevitable.
x. Capaldi. To end on a positive. My knowledge of awards is pretty dismal, but whatever is a prestigious and respected award is what he deserves come the time. Hats off to you sir, you have been brilliant to watch.
Right. Now someone pass me the gin.
