"EVERYONE TOGETHER NOW!"
Jun. 30th, 2008 12:37 amI'm still gently geeking out over the latest ep of Doctor Who. Today I finally got around to watching the Confidential, which included shots of the first script read-through with all the cast wherein they hear the lines of the Big Bad for the first time.
So this week we had the return of the Daleks! *bounce* We also had the return of Davros - though this is the first time I've met him he still geninely creeped me out in a good way and I'm fast becoming a fan of Julian Bleach who has just nailed his parts so far in both Torchwood and Doctor Who.
Anyway, the script read-through was very sweet. Nick Briggs hooked up the voice modulator for his lines, and so thus we have the first reaction of Torchwood when faced with fearsome, awe-inspiring Dalek Supreme and 'EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!!:

*geeks out* How much more lovely could Eve Myles be? :) And incidentally, the chap sitting to the left of Gareth David-Lloyd, the one with the lovely eyes:

Is that chap Julian Bleach himself? *squints*
Final shot of the rest of the cast. Or more specifically Liz Sladen and the lad who plays her son Luke. I'm including this mainly because I am baffled at how appalling that baseball cap is. Also because his grungy gear does remind me a little bit of GDL, which amuses me greatly:

I do think one reason I like Tennant so much is knowing that he is just a geeky as the rest of us. He remembers the original Davros, and awwww! but look at his smile as he finally gets to meet one of his childhood terrors:

Back to the ep itself and, rather like before, there were various aspects which left a bit to be desired. Not least the frequent waving of magic wand and easy plot devices. BUT the reason these were used was so we could get down to the action, or rather get down to seeing all the guest-stars and regulars this series start to converge.
I've said before that the guest-stars that really stole my heart were the Torchwood ones. I do love SJA and DW, but Torchwood is my show, something I quickly realised when I saw them back onscreen for the first time in months.
That said. *smaps Jack* Love Jack dearly, and I get why he has to flail in order to make the Doc's eventual appearance all the more a big deal BUT it still niggles a bit considering all he's managed in the past. So, my love in this ep did mainly fall on Gwen and Ianto. I did feel for them. Jack knows he can rely on the Doctor. Gwen and Ianto in their turn rely on Jack, who last time vanished and this time goes to pieces and doesn't seem to offer them any bracing words of support at all.
And yes. I am a Ianto fan, and yes, I did find it amusing that in the midst of TEH END OF THE WORLD he still has time to quiz Jack about matters closer to home:
This is Torchwood. This is Torchwood trying to figure out how best to proceed when the earth has apparently shifted into a new part of the universe and there are unidentified aliens coming for them. See Torchwood concentrate.

This is Ianto. Ianto is yet again facing a possible end to everything. See Ianto concentrate concentrate-

- wait, what was that about a solider in a bar?

Jack: crap. Purely professional, can I draw your attention back to the small matter of possible END OF THE UNIVERSE.

Aaand we're back to concentrate concentrate on finding a way to save humanity.

Which translates as welcome back Ms Jones! HUZZAH!!

Yes, for a few glorious minutes, Gwen and Ianto finally got through to someone who was willing to bounce around a few ideas which went beyond just sitting back and waiting to die. They swung into action like only Torchwood can, with plentiful CGI and bouncy electronic music. Until the inevitable happened and Harriet Jones took one for the human race.
Let us see how Gwen and Ianto react to the news that they're back to having to rely entirely on Jack Harkness for guidance:

Oh yes, they are happy happy bunnies.
Still, we then have the Doc and Donna enter stage left. Jack is over the moon and promptly starts gathering his gear to go and see what the Doc's going to do to get them out of this fix. Gwen and Ianto - because they are AWESOME - decide to put on hold one small tiddly bit of news and instead help Jack prepare to go out.

They then smile and say that of course it's absolutely okay for Jack to toddle off and leave them, they'll be fine, after all what could possibly go wrong in his absence:

Cue blue flashy light.

Farewell Jack. In case you were interested, the tiddly bit of news was the Daleks had just locked onto the Bay and were heading right for Torchwood. Just thought you might be interested. For now we'll return to Gwen and Ianto who are about to make a last stand:

The final scenes between Gwen and Ianto made my heart swell, I do love my team. They know and accept that they are about to die, but they are Torchwood. Harriet Jones has just died for Earth, last series Ianto said he'd be willing to die if it meant saving others, Gwen was prepared to blow herself up with Hart to save Cardiff. This is what they do. All that really remains to decide is their nature of going out. Ianto points out that guns don't work on Daleks. Gwen acknowledges this. And then continues that doesn't he want to go out fighting? Like Owen. Like Tosh. "Yes ma'am."

My heart... *clutches*

Oh Torchwood.
But potential heartbreak aside, I am sorry, but this was also one of the coolest moments of the ep for me.
We have a dalek.
In the Hub.
Let me repeat. We have a f**king Dalek in the f**king Hub :)

Now it's only another six days before we find out just how Gwen and Ianto survive. Because they will survive, I will not hear otherwise!
Finally, because I didn't realise these were out there but found them highly entertaining...
One of the presenters from Blue Peter (kid's TV show) got a chance to film a small part in the actual DW finale. These clips do contain SPOILERS as to who are the villains and guest-stars next week.
x. Full clip here - very entertaining behind-the-scenes footage, giving confirmation as to the fate of at least one character after the credits rolled yesterday.

Date: 2008-06-30 01:38 am (UTC)Hehe, yeah, Jack does have the emotional sensitivity and awareness of a brick at times, bless him *pets* I'm giving him a small allowance in that he thinks his team is actually safely hidden in a locked-down Hub, and that also he's so eager to get off to the Doc because he wants the Doc to get busy saving Earth and his team. Plus of course he'll be forgiven if at some point next ep he does actually say/do something that shows he does remember the two poor suckers down there with a Dalek and maybe show a bit of emotional concern, just a little bit of righteous anger, is that too much for a fangirl to ask for? :)

Date: 2008-06-30 05:55 am (UTC)Oh em gee yes, please please? Just a speck of that? I know we got a backhanded comment FROM THE MASTER last time before we heard one breath about his team from Jack but... c'mon. He likes them this season, right? Ianto's 'we'll be alright' pings off so many rules of 'things not to say before someone leaves the room'. I know they'll most likely survive but still... *Flails* !!!!
