The Mother of the Mother has a birthday rolling around. She isn't too bad on the internet and given that she lives in the back of beyond, she is rather fond of the telly. We're thinking of getting her a subscription to one of those DVD rental schemes that post a DVD out to you and then when you're done you post it back.

Can anyone recommend/advise as to what we could go for?

I'm a member of LoveFilm (they were ScreenSelect back in the day), and I have to say, though I'm biased, I think they're probably you're best bet - first company in the UK to offer DVD rentals and they're still going strong, so that's a good sign :)

You can check out the various rental packages here, although you're best bet is probably one of the "Unlimited" ones (meaning there's no limit on how many get sent to you over the space of a month). I've still got the rental package I first signed up with when it was ScreenSelect - 3 DVDs at a time, £15 a month, no limits. And it has treated me very well!

They're usually very quick at sending out DVDs too, and their customer service is pretty decent should any problems arise.

Hope this helps!

Yeah, I kinda (totally by accident) lost a DVD once, but there were easy-breezy about it :) I don't know why, but I was expecting to feel the scowl over the phone line!

I use love film, they were a bit rubbish when they took over from Screen Select, but it's all settled down now and I have no complaints. I pay £14.9 a month.

You see, there was about a year (my first year at uni) when I was paying for my account but not using it *at all*... during that time they switched over to LoveFilm, and when I started getting e-mails from them I was all "I don't remember signing up to this... To the Junk Mail!"... eventually I picked up my account again during second year and realised my faux-pas :)

Yeah, I've been using Love Film for years without any significant problems- the've replaced damaged discs and when a couple have gone astray in the post it didn't cause any trouble. They have the best selection I think, too, particularly good on foreign films- actually they have good choice of gay-themed movies which was why I originally signed up.

The only downsde is if you want anything specific especially current chart movies or TV shows, for e.g., it can take a while to get them. You will get something but not necessarily the top films from your queued list.

I pay the top rate for unlimited DVDs each month, 3 at a time, £14.99, but cheaper options are available that would probably suit your mother of the mother better.

I don't know if you have netflix in the UK, but the US version is rather good and I have had them for years.
