Shallow thoughts on saturday's Doctor Who

All in all a cracking episode, can't wait for the conclusion next week. A few shallow thoughts.

(1) Donna continues to be brilliant.

(2) Martha continues to be awesome.

(3) Jack really does know his stuff. Ianto would look fabulous in a UNIT redcap. Or indeed the general UNIT uniform, I do have a thing for young men in uniform...

I also adore Donna and Martha together. So so relieved they haven't gone for a rehash of the jealousy/anxiousness that went with Rose meeting Sarah Jane. I knew I was on safe territory the moment Donna said exasperatedly 'She's engaged, you prawn.' Bless Donna, really, she doesn't fancy the Doctor herself and that gives her the ability to easily and genuinely say what she knows will help put Martha at ease. Namely that, yes, the Doctor has spoken of Martha, and also letting the focus go a bit on her own life and her engagement - Martha gets to glow and gush a bit, as well being quickly reminded that things are working out for her. :) Ditto in different ways for Martha. Even if the Doctor always will be a bit of a tender point for her, she's logical enough to know how to behave, and then is able to genuinely appreciate what it is in Donna that the Doctor likes without feeling her own place/authority is being threatened.

So this time round, I guess it's not so much as the missus meets the ex, but the favourite sister meets the ex. Only sister and ex get along like a house on fire, and it amuses me that the Doctor is now utterly outnumbered =)

You know, I was expecting to loathe Donna but she has won me over totally.

The young soldier/driver, can't recall his name, was gorgeous. *swoon*

It is tremendous fun - she really is looking after him. The scene where the Doc tries to tempt her back and then thanks her gushingly for saving him and only THEN realising that he completely misunderstood, and agreeing with Donna that he is a grade A numpty, was wonderfully done. It is the first time it really feels like we do have the Doctor and his companion on an equal footing and I love it :)

Ross, wasn't it? I think it was Ross, he was rather easy on the eye I will admit *ahem* Then again, I thought the black UNIT uniform was tremendously flattering for all the UNIT personnel. If we could ever get Ianto into one of those I think Jack would be in heaven!

It is so darn satisfying watching Donna with the Doctor....

It really, really is :) I loved the Doc's misunderstanding of her wanting to go home and then how he simply agreed with her straightaway when he called him the universe's greatest numpty. She is good for him and it's a delight watching them together.

Martha=win, Donna=win, Rose=looooosah :D I don't know if its merely because she was first but Martha and Donna are by about a million times over better than she was as aid to the Doctor and -personally- in character. I hope this epic return won't negate Martha and Donna's positive growth on the Doctor though....

I was a little nervous when I realised we would have all three companions in the same TARDIS, so to speak, but my hopes are growing now :) I've liked that from the start Donna has been in the know about both Rose and Martha, and fully aware of how much the Doctor misses them - but at the same time it's great that, unlike Martha, she doesn't feel at all threatened when he does start to reminisce. And given that Martha has now moved on with her own fiancée and is actually approving of Donna, I'm hoping that when they do meet Rose, Rose having learnt to like Sarah Jane, we'll just go straight to the general girl power and fond teasing of the Doctor, with minimal angst :)
