Well I suppose after Burn Gorman stealing the show for a couple of eps, and then a wedding, anything that followed was going to feel anticlimatic just a bit. Anyway, here be initial thoughts courtesy of the LB:
1) Although I know it is because he is the only one in the Hub at the time, my initial reaction to seeing Jack make his own coffee was 'HAH! He's in the doghouse!' Yes, not only is Jack on the instant but Ianto's has also left him out of the cinema invite obviously extended to Gwen and Owen (and I'd guess Tosh, except she turned it down in favour of work).
2) IT'S THE ELECTRODE! Awww, Ianto getting to get all nerd-y over something. We get a small hint about his past and his dad. I wonder if the lack of the mention of the mother was intentional. And I see what GDL means when he says that actors can get a bit of leeway with how they deliver their lines. A mental institution that Ianto knows, I supposed it's too much to hope that we'll hear more on this, but I'd like to if at all possible, we know scant enough as is about this guy.
AND DUDE WE GOT THE TWIN ACROBATS!! *does little dance for S1 canon*
3) "Oh, so that's what they're calling it these days." *sigh* Yet again, wink wink, nudge nudge, and frankly that line didn't seem to sit too well with any of them. It was said because it was in the script and some attempt at humour was needed, at least that's how it felt to me.
4) Oh there's plot going on somewhere, but I have to admit I'm unconvinced. To be fair, the two actors playing the villains this week are both doing a fine job, truly they are. Probably they're the best thing about this ep. However the dialogue... *wince* This really isn't working for me.
5) Torchwood running around after a metal pot thingie that contains the last breaths of the victims. It's a nice concept but again, it just ain't working for me on screen. Instead I'm remembering that scene from Ice Age where they're all going 'PROTECT THE MELON!!!'
6) YAY! KIDDIE LIVES!! Great, now who's going to be the one to tell the poor thing that his sis and parents have both snuffed it.
7) BUT BUT BUT! We do finally have someone who gets the idea of a good old-fashioned X-Files-esque ending. They come in pairs, so to speak. Or in this case, there're still films out there.
8) I am sorry, but no nurse would ever let someone without identification get within a few feet of their patients. Also, they would NEVER dish out patient details at the same time as the patient name. NHS, dude, NHS, patient confidentiality and the sure and certain knowledge that the trust will have your guts for garters if you break that contract. Also, Jack gave the kid the number for TW? WTF?! Although I suppose they did so because it was an ongoing investigation and once it was over, hello Retcon.
In conclusion. I enjoyed this mainly because it was Torchwood and I love the cast. In terms of prettiness, there was plenty of Ianto running around in his red shirt (*has a moment*) and for his character at least they did drop a few interesting hints. Nice memories about his dad, no mention of the mother, and maybe the writers will pick up on the line delivery regarding the mental health hospital.
Writing-wise?
Where was my team?!! I didn't feel any real dynamic between any of them. I can see why the plot worked on paper, if I write it down, it does sound wonderfully creepy and a nice shaggy dog/ghost story. But on screen it just didn't hit any buttons for me. There was no sense of character from any of them. I missed Gwen's humour, Ianto's one-liners, Owen's sarcasm, Tosh just being awesome and Tosh. I suppose Jack at least got a bit more his past drawn up, but over all... Nope. I'm going to need to rewatch this one, maybe I need to be in a different set of mind. Apparently Hammond also did the fairies tale? Well at least that one had the roses. And Estelle. This, I'm not too sure what we learnt by the time the credits rolled.

Date: 2008-03-12 11:21 pm (UTC)2) I felt there was a lot about Ianto in this ep. Particularly him being the "local boy".
I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THE TWIN ACROBATS. I didn't notice that.
3) I'd be happy with the Jack/Ianto show, srsly: they flirt, they snog, sometimes they fight crime, it's JACK AND IANTO.
please?sTill, they were together a lot. that'll do me for now. (do me, lol)4) yeah, something about it didn't quite work for me either: it was a great idea, just a little, well, empty. not backed up enough.
5)nice concept, not backed up. ALSO, Jack's TIMELINE: WHAT NOW?
6) er, why was Ianto crying? I, er, didn't get it :(
7) nice S1 link ;) It will come back to haunt them I'm sure.
8) exactly what I thought. Patient Privacy, People!
overall... meh.

Date: 2008-03-13 12:38 am (UTC)Yep, I think that's me in a nutshell at the moment.
I am a Jack/Ianto girl, but honestly it's not for that reason I'm so subdued about this ep. There was nothing between ANY of the team members. No sign between Owen and Jack or Owen and Tosh what has passed between them. No sign from Jack and Gwen that she's obviously back from her honeymoon and he's no doubt been missing her. Nothing between Ianto and Jack or Ianto and Owen post their talk over the coffee machine. It was just all a bit soulless considering the past few eps have been nothing but bonding with the team through their trials and tribulation.
Ah well. Maybe it'll go better on second viewing.

Date: 2008-03-13 12:39 am (UTC)I think I knew I was in trouble when I realised about halfway through that I was, seriously, just watching and thinking how pretty each cast member looked. I wasn't really too taken with much else. For example I did think the mermaid lady had the most fantastic legs and I envy her ability to wear hotpants. As for actual plot and what was going on... pfft.

Date: 2008-03-13 12:54 am (UTC)Ahem.
I wonder if Gareth boffed her?Not the old lady, obviously!Though her looking at JB and his Boxoically-unlined skin and telling him firmly that he had old eyes in a young face and that wasn't a good thing, that cracked me up. Oh, I really am 12, I know. Now off to check out his arse in the last few scenes. It's looking pretty fine, apparently! I missed it first time - too busy concentrating on where all the bloody *personalities* had been hidden.

Date: 2008-03-13 01:13 am (UTC)Nah, she's too classy for a Newport lad like him ;)Hehe, so glad I wasn't the only one to have that thought flash through my mind. Though I was half expecting her to turn to Ianto and say something too as his connection to the past was surprisingly strong and seemed rather personal. I guess we did get the 'They touched you' but I think that was referring to the passing shadows in the cinema as opposed to something years ago. Pity.
And if you find any sign of the team's personalities whilst cheering yourself on pinstriped, red shirted goodness, do let me know where they are!
