Crikey. So tonight was the night of two, two, brand new TW eps being shown back-to-back. This is just my initial reaction, to be honest there was too much to from both eps to even begin doing serious meta yet.
First up, Adam:
To be honest? I felt it was trying to do too much in just 50 minutes, but I love that it tried gamely nevertheless to tackle everything. Of course I enjoyed it. And can I keep Tosh?
Oh god, a confident, snarky Tosh is a joy to behold. I want one. I don't blame Owen for wanting one. His declaration of love, and her reaction to it, was painfully funny and played so well by both actors.
Gwen. Rhys... *sniffle* After making me fall in love so much with the pairing last week, it was heartbreaking to see them torn asunder yet again. I liked that Jack actively reassured Rhys and promised to fix things. I also liked that even with the lost memories, Gwen began to fall for Rhys all over again. Her 'But not like I love you,' is fine with me, in that it will fit with my belief that yes, she does love both men, but in different ways, both equally powerful and life-changing for her.
Ianto.
I am sorry, but what self respecting man keeps a diary. A journal, maybe. But a diary, no, chicks do that. But moving on...
I would have liked to have seen a bit more of the unrepentantly murderous side of Ianto, not just the anguish he felt over it all - though I can see why it had to be done. That said, what I did adore was his interactions with Jack as a result. I loved beyond all reason that even when all evidence initially pointed to the contrary, Jack's faith in Ianto never wavered and he point blank refused to consider that Ianto really could have done something so cold-blooded.
And of course, yes, I did melt like the fangirl I am at his kiss on Ianto's forehead during the revival of the memories.
As for Grey... we're probably going to see him again, right? I'm not spoiled and I don't want to be, but considering we now know he vanished and that John 'found' him, I'm hoping this enigmatic brother will make an appearance in time for the finale.
In conclusion - poor Tosh.
Next up, even as I'm trying to get my head around the previous ep's plot, Reset:
Am I the only one not too traumatised by this ep? In any case, yes, I enjoyed it although being initially wrong-footed by just how perky and cheerful everyone seemed. I suppose I should have learnt by now that smiles only signal the impending storm.
The moment Tosh mentioned the pool again, the alarm bells starting ringing, and then when it was (a) made clear that she meant a date and that (b) made clear that Owen was saying 'Yes' I was pointing at the TV screen yelling "DOOOMED!! DOOOOOOMED!!! YOU ARE SO DOOOOOOOOOMED!!!"
But more on that later.
Martha. Great to see her, and loved how Ianto snapped to attention the moment she showed her card, though I'm disappointed that Jack didn't make some point on each secret society needing its 'Jones' to complete the ensemble :)
Ianto. In a red cap. This will keep me smiling for a while. I'm not quite sure how to read his and Martha's discussion of Jack since I'm not entirely sure, yet, on what kind of tone the ep was aiming for considering that at the beginning it was very Doctor Who-y perky but by the end was definitely Torchwood. Because I am shallow, I did cackle like a drain at Ianto's response of "Innovative," and I like to think that the pause at the end was because both were realising that perhaps he couldn't completely just smile it off as playful, mutual 'dabbling'.
Owen.
OWEN ::clings::
Well, considering that (a) we are frankly too early into the series to lose a series regular and that (b) there have been clips of him in previous TW series 2 preview that haven't yet aired, I can't be too distraught in that I am pretty sure we haven't seen the last of this guy. I'd be happy to bet a reasonable sum (say a chocolate digestive) on him returning before too long. I can't say how or in what capacity or, more importantly, for how long, but I don't see Owen as gone yet. As the dude says, he's only 'Mostly Dead'.
Still.
OWEN!! ::clings::
Also from the preview for next week's ep, I like that it seems Jack is really distraught over the loss of his team. In my mind, I do have it that Jack genuinely loves all of TW, he came back from death repeatedly for them. Somehow they are now his connection to the 21st century and giving him a sense of home and family and belonging, something he's obviously missed for a long while. It would kill him (so to speak) to lose that, be it through losing Gwen choosing love and Rhys over him and TW, or, as in this ep, losing Owen to a bullet. Jack strikes me as a pragmatist, he knows he can't keep them out of danger, but at the moment that lost year is still too raw for him to actually let any of them go.
So, what are the bets he'll try something risky next week to bring Owen back? More to the point, if he does, and assuming he succeeds, what will be the final price. Because there's always a price. You cheat death, something has to give, well known fact on every TV show (i.e. AtS/BtVS/SPN - the only shows I can think of off the top of my head who've dealt with this).
In conclusion - it is official, Tosh's love is the Kiss of DEATH. Poor Tosh.
I need more wine. I need to watch these again. God. Another week to go to figure out where all this is going. Oh Torchwood *pets*

Date: 2008-02-14 01:56 am (UTC)Man, I wanna know whether Burn is in series 3 now! Though I am sure those sadist PTB won't tell us for a while.

Date: 2008-02-14 02:08 am (UTC)Though oh god yes. I both do and don't want a final answer as to whether or not he'll return. Given how Barrowman initially played quite cool on the matter and then recently apparently seemed up for TW series 3, I have a sinking feeling that these guys will play their cards close to their chests until the last available opportunity. F**kers. ;)

Date: 2008-02-14 03:21 am (UTC)I know Burn enjoys working on the show and really likes his fellow cast members - John singled him out as a cast member he is especially close to during his recent appearance - so I will continue to hope that Burn isn't quite done with TW yet.

Date: 2008-02-14 08:58 pm (UTC)That said, he does enjoy the show, and when folks genuinely enjoy being on set and actually like those they work with, they're more likely to go that little bit further. Even if he isn't a regular next series, I'd imagine he'd crop up at least a couple of time. Plus, he does have a new family, if he's based in Cardiff then the added security for a couple of months would probably be another factor in TW's favour.

Date: 2008-02-14 09:01 pm (UTC)What I can't see him as doing is calling it a 'diary'. For blokes a diary is what you simply record times and dates of appointments. The thing you record actual events and thoughts in is a 'journal'. A girl keeps a 'diary', a bloke keeps a 'journal'. But whatever its name, I do love Ianto's little black book :)

Date: 2008-02-14 09:06 pm (UTC)I did like the first one, but I agree, it could have been expanded since there was so much going on for all the characters. If they'd had more time it would have made a nice two-parter. Still, they did a pretty good job with what they did manage to cram into 50 minutes.
Hope you enjoy 'Reset' when you get to see it! :)

Date: 2008-02-17 02:04 am (UTC)Reset was nicely done, and of course I thoroughly enjoyed Martha's gentle teasing of Ianto over Jack's request for a red cap :)
