Initial reactions to TW ep 3
Jan. 30th, 2008 09:54 pm::bursts into tears::
But it was good.
So, in no particular order, and I reserve the right to completely change my mind upon second viewing, my thoughts were:
(1) ANVIL!! ANVIL FALLING FROM THE SKY! At least, assuming that the writers really are going to try for continuity, Ianto and Gwen's conversation about TW personnel dying young would seem to me to confirm my worst fears - namely one of my beloved staff will bite the dust this series.
(2) OLD SCHOOL TORCHWOOD SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! I knew it was coming, but even so, seeing 20th century Torchwood investigating the Rift was made of awesome =)
(3) Oh Gwen. ♥♥♥ Loved at the beginning her and Jack playing mummy and daddy as one of their kiddies goes out to enjoy herself/himself. And then straight from that, to her and Ianto acknowledging their mutual feelings for Jack, and Gwen not letting him sink back into his S1 state. 'Cheer up!'
(4) Gratuitous snogging. Oh yes. Bring it on. Though actually I thought it was a nice build-up. It didn't feel as 'deep' as some of Gwen and Jack's past conversations, but then again Gwen is female and females have no problem with pushing the males until they finally spill the beans. Ianto was more held-back, more simple questions, but with him and Jack I think it always will be their actions that'll speak more than anything else - as a general rule, guys aren't gagging to talk about their feelings.
(5) TOSH!! ::bursts into tears:: I thought there was a lovely chemistry between her and the soldier dude whose name I cannot now remember. He did a great job. Also on a completely shallow note, I have to agree with Gareth - that lady does have the most fantastic, er, bosom. I like seeing Owen beginning to realise that possibly he cares for her, and equally liked that this time round Tosh has grown in confidence enough to not go running after him the way she might once have done. Though I can't blame her, her love life has been pretty doomed so far.
(6) Just realised that Ianto's snark machine was as far as I can remember, completely turned-off this ep. Which I suppose isn't that surprising given he wasn't in it that much and the tone of the ep and Tosh's personal involvement, but even so, hopefully we haven't seen the last of his humour.
::eyes clock:: Right, I shall ponder on this more and then rewatch at 11.30pm :)

Date: 2008-02-01 03:12 am (UTC)As much as I'm all about pretty boys kissing, I feel like we skipped a few steps with Janto. We haven't seen enough of their "relationship" for them to be at the "I'm afraid to lose you. Kiss me, now!" stage.
If they were lesbians it might fit, but this is a notorious manwhore and his part-time shag. We're definitely missing a few pages, imo.

Date: 2008-02-05 12:41 am (UTC)See, on the one hand I agree, I would have liked to have seen a bit more the buildup to the point wherein Jack is coming pretty darn close to saying 'I love you'. However, it is in keeping with the writing of Torchwood. Unless the relationships are somehow relevant to the current plot of the week, they will be left to the watchers' imaginations. Gwen and Owen had the same thing last series. We saw them get together, and then the next we really saw of them, it was a messy break-up to emphasise how both were going a wee bit off the rails.
In which case, I am wondering if Jack and/or Ianto is about to hit some nasty plot complication in the very near future and the ep's writer was told to make sure that the audience knew Jack and Ianto are still together so that the reason/ramification of whatever's about to happen makes more sense. I haven't read any spoilers for upcoming eps, so it is just a hypothesis at the moment :)
