Question for the FL re. Torchwood Spoilers

Right, so just sounding the waters. Those of you watching Torchwood, what is the general consensus regarding use of icons made from future eps (i.e. screencaps from official Beeb trailers - I am not talking about the more detailed 'Previews' that go online)?

(a) To me it counts as a spoiler so yeah, it'd be nice if you didn't use it in general LJ entries.
(b) If it's from a trailer already aired on the BBC1/2/3/4, you can use in general LJ entries.
(c) Touchwood? What is this Touchwood of which you speak?

In other news I am so tired I could cry. Went out last night with some mates from work and had a generally fabulous time. Today we blew away the cobwebs by walking along the seafront and getting the seven shades of s**t blasted out of us by the wind. Good stuff.

Torchwood is ever in my mind. I was accidentally spoiled (I think) during perusal of the FL today. Can't complain as it wasn't plot specific, and to be honest the sentiment did send me spinning up past Cloud 9 once more even though I was simultaneously backing away with all due haste.

Is it Wednesday yet?

Probably a: I think until the ep airs on time, it's a spoiler, even if the trailers have included material - catching those is a random thing and some people do actually avoid them. So IMO all the snog icons were very naughty indeed!

You realise I want to know what thing you were spoiled for now, and is it something *I* already know! Makes a change from it being the other way around most of the time, hee!

TW has eaten my head alive right now. It's ridiculous, really!

How did you realise it was the snog icons that had me thinking? Admittedly I have on myself, and I was about to use it, but then I realised that actually probably quite a few folks would have never seen the trailer and would be going WTF?!

Actually it was on your LJ, though it's no-one's fault as it did say spoiler-y for S2, so I'm hoping you do know about it! It wasn't that specific, it was just the 'L' word mentioned in quotes and in a certain context... I didn't even get to the end of sentence, I hypothesised it was to do with the synopsis I was avoiding, but even so my mind is now going a million miles an hour trying to forget it and failing dismally.

It is ridiculous how much my brain is taken over by Torchwood! I am utterly with you in that respect. I can keep on smiling through the most shite-est of workdays purely because I am replaying KKBB scenes in my head or pontificating the meaning of the spoilers I am aware of for the rest of the season.

Oh yeah, what John said in that interview / article? MADE ME HAPPY. Though you're right, I really ought to be clearer about threads meaning that spoilers beyond the ep that's aired are coming up! Mind you, I'm still being hopeless... the Jack ? Ianto thread on OG is chock-full of future ep spoiler and I just read one for 2.03 and it sounds WONDERFUL but there you go, surprise blown again! I would like some self-control, pelase, and preferably before the whole season is done.

I know the kiss was (and will be) lovely - hell, I posted stills for it in my blog the moment I had them! But I made sure it was clear they were spoilers from the trailer - couldn't be more ep-specific at that time, of course. I actually think the universal iconning of the kiss was pretty bad, since it really did spoil the shit out of anyone who might have been staying clean and was in any way interested in Jack / Ianto.

I can't stop going back over Gareth being so slyly entertained at LFCC when I was asking about why the relationship had been made so ambiguous in the first season (and all the het ones were so overt). OMG, he must have been up to his oxters in snoggage and the rest by then! But I have to say, when he said 'nothing ambiguous this season', I honestly never imagined it was anything in the same galaxy as where we are, where we look to be going. It blows my mind over and over!

To be fair, the spoilers, particularly when it comes to my favourite to emo!boys, are pretty insane at the moment. There's spoilers from articles, spoilers from trailers, spoilers from previews, spoilers from specific interviews... and it doesn't help when actually you don't know which ep they're referring to in the first place so you've no idea if you're being spoiled for something early or potentially something more climatic in terms of season arcs. They almost need a separate classification system of their own there are so many of them.

Agreed, bless him, he must have been so very very aware that there would be NO ambiguity this season (and yes, now I am replaying the emphasis he put on that at LFCC), and not only that but that it would actually be handled (so far) so very well. The Office Scene was handled brilliantly by all, regardless of how it all ends in the long term. I LOVE that both GDL and RTD single out that scene as one they're particularly proud of.

I was going to comment earlier but only just properly gone online - sorry about Hamnpork, as you say, he had a good life and hopefully right now is contentedly digging into a good slice of cheese somewhere.

And yes, roll on Wednesday, it's odd how despite the fact I've had to wait a year already, it makes it no easier to have to wait another 6 days for my next TW fix. Bastards. They're playing us like trout and they love it.

Thank you! ::takes notes:: I don't feel bad about screencaps of individual characters looking pretty/cool in non-spoiler-y ways, but I did suddenly realise that even a simple screencap can reveal something quite plot-specific if you're trying to go spoiler-free! :)

Personally, I go with b., as I tend to watch trailers and look at promo pics. If a trailer has something in it that looks to be a Really Big Deal, like a surprise guest casting or Really Big Plot Point that seems like something other people might not want to know beforehand, I'd use discretion with posting things that would give that away.

Yep, I think that's pretty much what I'm veering towards. I don't kind if it just shows character A or character B doing looking pretty and doing something non-specific, but when they're clearly doing something that potentially gives away plot I'll probably leave those icons for comments in designated spoiler threads.

Hmm it is a tricky one. If I'm being brutal then in all honesty I do tend to go by UK air-dates. So once it's aired here, I don't feel too bad about using icons made from screencaps - unless of course it's for something absolutely huge and plot-twisty (e.g. an animated icon of Jack turning into a pterodactyl) in which case I would try and hold off until I can tell that a good portion of my non-UK FL have managed to *ahem* acquire the means to watch the eps.

I guess personal discretion when it comes to UK vs. US airdates. You can normally tell when something really is too big to be used without warning :)

Personal discretion is a noble compromise, but I would tend to say that, once the eps have aired in the UK, their content loses spoiler status.

The usual tack with US fandom is that once the California Hippies have seen it, it's all fair game. We never held back for the Brits' sake, I don't think anyone would have the right to ask more of you. ;Þ

I tend to hold back until I can see at least one or two folks have managed to *ahem* obtain the ep even if they're not in the UK, so I'll probably continue in that vein for now :)

Personally I don't mind what is in the icons, I read most of the spoilers I come across, unless they are for later in the series, in which case I'll read them closer to the time.

But with regard to most people I would probably say b, verging towards a. If I was staying away from spoilers I would be slightly annoyed at the surprise.

Unfortunately it's not wednesday yet :( but my consolation is I have just done my exam, and now have the week off to legitametly immerse myself in lots of Torchwood (including spoilers :D)

I did initially start out as you did, i.e. only reading spoilers for eps about to air, but recently I for some reason wind up taking the decision to only spoil myself to the extent of watching any trailers aired on the Beeb. I even gave the previews a miss, though the anticipation is killing me as the spoilers I do catch look brilliant! =)

The majority does seem to be a mix of b/a with veering towards a to be safe. I'll keep my trailer-made icons for behind LJ-cuts I think.

I'd go with A, but then I am a spoiler whore already and there are icons you can make from spoilery bits that are so general you wouldn't know if they're a cap from an episode last series. But A to be kind with the rest of yoru flist and to be on the safe side.

Yep, those kind of icons I don't worry about, after all Jack sitting smiling at his desk in S2 looks pretty much identical to Jack sitting smiling at his desk in S1, with possibly different shirts :) I think the concensus does seem to be edge towards A to be safe, so I'll stick with that on the whole.

Hehe, it has pretty much been my happy place for the past week. I can either ponder on the emo!tasticness of the general hinted plot, or I can just dwell on the hardships you must have to endure if you're John Barrowman. Staunch little troopers those two :)

I think that's more or less the way I'm heading. I'll keep possibly spoiler-y icons behind an LJ-cut for a few days at least post the UK airing, but after that I will be succumbing to my need to squee where needed :)
