Sarah Jane Adventure
Nov. 6th, 2007 08:27 pmJust seen the second part of What Happened to Sarah Jane? Also means I've just seen the preview for next week's ep.
Hmm. See, whilst I always accepted that SJA was seriously cracking good stuff, I was also enjoying the relative simplicity that comes with a show being, at the end of the day, aimed at the kiddiewinks. However, in all honesty, that is starting to be left by the wayside in much the same way as DW occasionally would spring moments of quite dark angst on us. The one sense in which it doesn't seem to be going too complex is that the characters aren't really dealing with angst/doubts from within yet. No-one has yet betrayed/double-crossed/etc, the threats have all been from without. To be honest, I do prefer it that way, I have enough torn/anguished characters in shows I adore already.
In any case, SJA is going from strength to strength at the moment - I seem to remember reading a while back that it had only been confirmed for one series, however I am hoping this is just a flaw of the imagination as I would adore there to be a series 2 :)
In conclusion of this latest arc:
(1) Maria's Dad FTW. He is the dude.
(2) I know that TW had a point made about it being a separate show that would stand on its own, we only got the smallest mentions of the Doctor and told that apart from Jack there would be no cross-over (HAH!) However the mentions of the Doctor in SJA are just so frequent and so blatant, I can't honestly see how the writers would get away with it unless Sarah Jane was going to get a final scene with Ten - after all the words thrown about and displayed loyalties, she deserves that as do the audience (is this young whippersnappy really worthy of our Sarah's adoration?) So ho-hum, I wouldn't be surprised if the cheese-fest spoiler doesn't have a pinch of truth in it somewhere :)

Date: 2007-11-06 10:16 pm (UTC)There is something about this show... I'm not precisely fannish about it (says the woman writing fanfic, yeah) but there's this strange process whereby it plays out perfectly open, with all the characters being exactly what it says on their labels... and then there are all these tiny, almost subliminal emotional Velcro hooks that catch you without warning. Maybe it is just the same thing that any really good children's story is - simple, but resonant and almost accidentally profound. Ack, I'm making this sound far wankier than I mean to! We'll have to sit down and discuss it all NEXT WEEK HOMG!

Date: 2007-11-06 10:53 pm (UTC)I should point out that, although Alan is seriously yummy, he will not - alas - be making an appearance in this story, though some of his posessions may be. There will also be talk about his underpants, though I'm hoping this won't be too disturbing for any of us.
I need the long weekend too! I'm all PMT'd and snappy today!

Date: 2007-11-06 11:41 pm (UTC)I shall live with the disappointment. For the moment I'm happy with what I'm being shown on TV - he's not perfect but his heart is so in the right place when it comes to his family.
We shall drink to happy oblivion then!
