I'd squee if I had the energy
Sep. 2nd, 2007 08:58 pmSo today saw me quitting the parental home a little earlier than planned to meet with
princess_s and
rivier at the London Film & Comic Con. It was the first time of meeting the latter in the flesh, which led to an amusing exchange whereby we tried to locate each other via mobile for a few minutes before realising we were literally standing with our backs to each other at a distance of roughly five centimetres. We're bright sparks, really :)
princess_s had done proud in that she'd got autograph/photoshoot tickets for most of the Heroes folk and one Mr Patrick Stewart *bows down in awe* Sadly Tom Baker only turned out to have been doing the one day, but personally I wasn't too unhappy since my intended victim had dutifully turned up more-or-less on time. Princess S had gotten her autograph yesterday, so that left me and Riv to sidle up to the desk, purloin a shiny pic and try not to melt too much when we actually got to speak to the man himself.
I have to say my conversation was pretty pants because I'm used to having a bit of a queue behind me and a time limit, with the result that I'd expected to have a smile, an autograph and if I was lucky time enough to pop one succinct question. All in all, not more than say a minute. So perhaps you can picture my slight surprise when the first thing Gareth did was smile most charmingly (and unfairly considering the brain promptly went to mush in response), shake my hand (again, brain, mush) and ask me my name (which pure autopilot managed to relay). He didn't seem particularly rushed and it was with mild panic that I realised he was actually expecting to Have A Conversation.
Anyway. The one pre-planned, simple Should Only Take A Second To Answer question was wheeled out. Namely, would we see more of Ianto in civvies next season, or just the suit.
Response? One ep. We'll have one ep of him in civvies, but his suits do go more colourful and upmarket this season, with some from Saville Row (the lad did look adorably proud of this).
Then, despite GDL's best efforts to let me ask more and keep conversation going a little longer, my brain gave up and I think I burbled a little more inane chit-chat for a few seconds before princess_s and riv rescued me with the photo-request.
The photographic evidence says that he did actually stand up, lean over desk, put an arm round me and that we both smiled at the flash. Can I actually remember any of this? Can I hell. I have a vague memory of a whiff of pleasant aftershave, being pressed against something very warm (physical geometries led to me being practically tucked under his chin), and that's about it. I won't be entirely sure it actually happened until I have the proof from Rivier. (She being the only soul amongst us with a camera. Yes, we were that well planned).
The rest of the day was spent wandering around the stalls in search of a Torchwood keyring (couldn't find one, bah!), listening to a guest talk (Andee from Atlantis - did a cracking job), debating over Harry Potter pins (I got a Slytherin one, because Snape rules *nods*), and periodically passing GDL's desk in a rather pathetic attempt at discretion.
There were more specific questions asked of him regarding Torchwood, but I'm going to refer you to
rivier as she got more of the actual details, probably because she was the only one capable of forming proper sentences in his presence. I think the general info gleaned was:
x. GDL has been shooting more action, and even being allowed to add some of his own lines to the script. He says Ianto even manages to get his own fights, as well as getting more of his own sense of dry humour.
x. Apparently, and this was third-hand report of what GDL said to someone else, the relationship between Jack and Ianto does develop. I have to admit I'm not getting my hopes up just in case, and beside technically I would hope that all of Torchwood's relationships with Jack will develop considering their fragile state by the finale. However apparently at one point we do get a fun scene involving a shirtless Jack and possibly a shirtless Ianto. No idea how accurate this third/fourth-hand report is, but regardless it does conjure fun images :)
x. We will have again just the one ep with Ianto entirely in civvies.
x. GDL can open a beer bottle by simply using his teeth. (This was demonstrated towards the end of the day when he smuggled one in under the desk, presumably to keep him going as he already had a pile of Red Bulls and coffee mugs by him).
In general conclusion, GDL was lovely lovely lovely. He was polite and smiley, happy to chat, and yes in my personal opinion he was obnoxiously good looking =) He's also deceptively huge. Sitting down he seems just pretty and nice, but at one point he was standing straight and he was suddenly looking rather tall. He also has a real man's hands, in the pic it did look a bit like his mitt might cover almost half my arm.
All in all? Good times. Great company, good food (I'm still stuffed of 'Gourmet' burger), and of course some wonderful pics to treasure and call my own :)

Date: 2007-09-02 08:50 pm (UTC)I blame it on the lack of queuing. Although, if you remember, most of my AD queuing time at Collectormania was spent telling you (and anyone else around) that I was going to throw up with nerves. So count yourself lucky you didn't up-chuck over GDL.
So happy you got to meet the man in person. *hugs you tight*

Date: 2007-09-02 09:04 pm (UTC)He was absolutely lovely, if I wasn't already I am now utterly smitten (though obviously 'utterly' mean 'in conjunction with Alexis, ASH, Bedella, Woodward, Barrowman, Tennant... etc etc' ;) )
And we spoke of you a fair bit too. Namely because Princess_s was trying to explain bits of Heroes to me (I've yet to see a single ep thanks to having no TV), and the moment she mentioned 'Dad angst' I said 'Eloise would love this show!'

Date: 2007-09-02 10:13 pm (UTC)And also, if you get a chance, try Dexter - which is also all about the Dad angst. And a serial killer. Who is the hero. Or anti-hero. Anyway, it's got Darla in it and it's bloody fantastic.
Sorry. Just finished watching Dexter, and I'm all awibble. Anyway, I'm so glad you had a good weekend squeeing. It's important to squee regularly to ensure good mental health. *hugs*
