Well, when it was good it was very very good. (And considering that that good involved David Tennant and John Simms and Freema Agyeman and John Barrowman, it was pretty bloody fantastic.)

But when it was bad... oh good god.

I'm going to get the worst off my chest straight away. Jack as Face of Boe. At the time, I did laugh and grin with Ten and Martha with the whole 'No wai!' thing because I find the actors charismatic and I laugh when they do. But the moment that has passed... Am I the only one less than pleased with this revelation.

I like Jack, I really do, I do not want to think that at the end of all this, all his trying, he's going to wind up as a head in a tank with no-one knowing who he is, where he comes from, no real friends or family, and at the very end not even able to tell the Doctor who he is. To be honest I find it an upsetting fate for a favourite character, not to mention how on earth can you really root for Torchwood knowing that however well he and his team eventually bond, they're still going to leave him one way or another.

I do hope that somehow this gets altered. From a DW point of view, yes, I can see that it is a very very cool nifty thing and involves the ever fun back referencing of past eps. But from a TW and Jack point of view... nooooo... *squishes Jack*

Now that's over. The good.

The slash. Dear god. As canon as you can get without explicitly making it canon.

Good. God.

The Doctor in a cage. With a bowl labelled 'Dog'. The dying in the arms comment. The actual dying in the arms. Master. All whilst both wearing suits. *has a moment*

The plot itself might have been a bit off the rails, but the key actors were brilliant and raised that ep to a far higher quality than it would otherwise have been. Go them.

Speaking of.

Martha Jones. Oh that woman, be still my beating heart. I can't say I was surprised at her choosing to leave full-time companionship. It was the right thing for her character as frankly she had outgrown that kind of life. It was a weird scene for me in that I love her character and really really don't want to lose her, but at the same time, the character I loved would have realised for herself that she needed to get out.

Mrs Saxon. Hmm. Not entirely sure what was going on there. Was that a black eye she had at the start of the ep? In any case, I did enjoy the whole twisted parallel she and the Master had with the Doctor and his companions. It was fitting that she was the one to finish her husband off.

Well, kind of. The grandparents were speaking over that last bit, but I'm assuming that, as with the Daleks, that was RTD wisely choosing not to try and permanently kill of an old series favourite.

OH OH OH!!

I knew there was something really important I loved in the ep.

Jack and Torchwood. He loves the Doctor, no question about that. He believes in the Doctor and will do anything for him. BUT. During a year's captivity whilst the world is sorted and slaughtered, his main thought is for his team and what's happened to them. It's not just duty and a sense of cold responsibility, he does care for them, and I hope when the series starts next year they get to realise this.

Though, again, it could become a moot point considering this whole Boe comment. Woe.

Someone on my flist has a great theory about the Jack/FoB thing:
(1) Jack hears Martha mention the Face of Boe, in Utopia (and doesn't react as if the name's familiar)
(2) Jack's had a year with nothing to do but think up practical jokes *g*
