Week of the LB
Jun. 29th, 2007 11:28 pmHmm, so you know those really irritating memes that being 'You know when you're overly obsessed with X when Y makes you go Z'? Have to admit it tickled me a bit too much at work to discover a new employee has the surname Harkness and to hear payroll discussing him.
Also got around to rewatching The Sound of Drums. My fannish heart is contented in that barely five minutes into the ep we get: Jack, Ten and Martha finally get a few minutes breather wherein they all crash into her room. As they're walking in through the door Jack's already on his mobile.
Ten: Jack! Who're you calling, you can't tell anyone we're here.
Jack: Just some friends... but no-one seems to be answering.
I love it doesn't take long for Jack to remember his team and I wish I knew just why he was calling because honestly there are so many options. Is he calling because he wants to reassure them he's OK. Is is callling to warn them. Is he calling because he thinks they can help, even if they all the way up in Cardiff. Is he calling because he's just twigged that The Master is the PM and probably knows about Torchwood and is worried that his team is in danger. I like to imagine it's a mixture of all of these and it warms my fannish heart. In the series Jack always seemed to have one eye on the door, and I felt bad on their behalf that he didn't seem particularly aware of how important they really were to him.
This weekend I have once again relocated to the Southern reaches of this sceptered isle to spend time with my elders. I almost ran over a baby rabbit and saw several splattered badgers on the roadside on my drive down. Ah, the countryside, lovely...
ETA: spoilerly spec re: Jack's final scenes in comments.

Date: 2007-06-29 10:40 pm (UTC)Mmmm, rural life! Notice any burger vans on your way down? And are the elders going to understand your need to be left undisturbed in a locked room with the curtains drawn for an hour or so tomorrow evening?

Date: 2007-06-29 10:48 pm (UTC)OOOH! And my other pondering has been about That Scene. The spoilerly footage of the Ten, Jack and Ten posted up on YouTube a while back. See I always assumed that when the Doc did what he did, it was a way for Jack to stay in contact. But now... well, Jack seems pretty gizmo-ed up. I'm wondering if maybe the Doc is deliberately taking that all away again so that Jack and more specifically TW can't get up to anything foolish. Oh the angsty possibilities.
Heh, and yes, I think the grandmother will understand. She already knows that Saturday night is night of holy Who obligation, so I've no doubt she'll be sympathetic to the fact it's the finale =)

Date: 2007-06-29 11:08 pm (UTC)Part of me is now firmly convinced that the footage was a red herring, because it seems like such a giveaway - the whole "they all survive, they're all in good fettle, they're all happy with each other and Jack parts from Ten willing and smiling". The other part of it wants it SO MUCH! Mostly because I can't get over my hope that (a) their shock reaction is to Jack getting a slap in the kisser before he gets the open arms of welcome, and (b) who might be delivering the slap! Though slapping a man in the face is such a girly thing, I suppose it'd have to be Gwen, bah!
If it is true... I don't think Ten was kiboshing the Vortex fetish-strap: more that he was fixing it or putting a phone home on it, maybe? Jack just seems too content for it to be happening. I don't think the Doctor can be too worried about Jack misusing it - after all, without him there to add the fine tuning, Jack's chance of space-hoppering back / forward to any particularly clear point in time comes with a margin for error of about +/- 120 years. And Jack's had a season of wishing, respectively, for the Doctor, answers and Death - that's quite enough angst! Now I want him to wish to spend many happy hours chasing his pretending-to-be-reluctant secretary all over the Hub!
19 hours!

Date: 2007-06-30 12:01 am (UTC)It's killing me now trying to figure out just what shocked the Doc and Martha. Knowing my luck it's probably nothing at all to do with Jack, but what if it is *ponders* Though actually, considering the last we've heard of TW3 they were all off in the Himalayas, it could realising that the latest recruit is a yeti.
Yep, I think probably the Doctor's giving Jack some home call option or a home teleport option - you're right, Jack does skip off a little too quickly if he's just had his wings clipped.
*eyes clock*
I'm also now imagining the endless fun that will result when Jack reveals to the team for the first time that they have a teleporter, mwhahahaha...
