Torchwood - ep 10 (Out of Time)
Dec. 21st, 2006 03:57 pmSo I've just about finished the Christmas shopping for the immediate family, now all that remains is wrapping the dratted stuff. On the plus side, I took half an hour off to watch an old episode of Absolute Power. Half an hour to wallow in Stephen Fry, an adorably young Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto), and Mark Lawson leading the first round of Pope Idol. Good stuff, there is no wrong *happy sigh*
I also indulged in a meme, if I'm going to join King Ianto's Coffee Club then I feel I should know more about the drink:

What kind of coffee are you?

You are fresh-ground coffee, black, first thing in the morning. You are a life-giving substance. The US government has secret stockpiles of you hidden in caverns under the Rockies. When for some reason you are late to a meeting, world financial markets are thrown into chaos. Your presence can cure warts and mild depression, and when you enter a room, you diffuse a gentle fragrance that reminds people of the happiest moment of their childhoods. Cats and children adore you; they curl up at your feet, where they torment small crawling things and occasionally lick your toes.

You know, I don't actually like coffee, but I feel a bad fangirl for admitting this since so many shows have characters who live on the stuff. Ah well.
And finally, last night I made a large macaroni cheese, and me and the two mates settled down for our weekly dose of Torchwood. M_ is still dreamy over Captain Jack, but A_ admitted she's starting to come around to Ianto and more specifically Jack/Ianto. Mwhahaha...
Well the general impression was that some of ep was brilliant stuff. Tears were genuinely shed for John when he found his son who was dying from Alzheimer's. We all took a shine to Louise and giggled like when she and Gwen had that talk about sex and men and all that jazz.
However Owen and Diane left them utterly cold, they'd seen too many films with similar storylines to feel particularly upset or anything when the 'happy couple' parted at the end. We all got bored by the long sex-scenes, wishing that instead we could have got some more dialogue from the others in the team and more plot development. That said, I did like that Owen was forced to grow up a little bit by loving and losing - though considering the writers' way of ignoring any character discoveries from ep to ep, I'm not expecting any changes to be showing next week or for that matter at any point during the rest of the series.
But Jack... Oh Jack. Loved the character development and storyline going on between him and John. Put that together with the Torchwood diaries on the TW.org.uk site, and suddenly it really isn't a surprise that Jack isn't the more care-free, flirty creature he used to be on Doctor Who. If anything I'm surprised he hasn't had a minor breakdown yet. Poor man feels absolutely no connection to this current timeline, not so much that he doesn't want to form emotional attachments as that, I think, he's honestly almost incapable these days. He's been through this life too many times. It was rather telling how he saw no reason why their visitors would mind gaining new identities to help blend in - I wonder what Jack's real name was, as I'm getting increasingly suspicious that he's been through many identities in his travels.
Ianto. *smishes* He was barely there, but I adored his scene in the supermarket, a slightly snarky, mildly amused Jeeves showing the new folks around.
Tosh. Hi Tosh! Bye Tosh! Where are you Tosh! *sigh* Has the poor lass really done anything this ep?
Owen. Great actor, really like him, but please I have no desire to see him sweaty and naked again any time soon. Keep it verbal, cos he rules at one-liners. Almost as much as Ianto.
Jack/Ianto. Er, yet again not so much a hint. But then again who still thinks TW has any idea of the concept of consistency for the characters. Though he and Jack were rather co-ordinated in their outfits by the end, so I'll take that and run with it if I may. Jack feels lost in time. Ianto's on a rebound. I do love my emotionally stable couples.
RHYS! *HUGGLES* SO GOOD TO SEE YOU! COME BACK MORE OFTEN!! *luffs*
Gwen. Again, a lot of nice character development here. You know, the moment the writers stop trying to make her out to be absolutely PERFECT OMG, I actually really like her. As a human with flaws but a good heart, I really like her - she's pretty, she's funny, she means well and Eve Myles can really pull off the humour and make scenes laugh-out-loud funny with just a simple choke on her coffee. Please, more Gwen in this vein and I'll be rooting for her properly. As it was, I felt for her suddenly getting wrong-footed by this 50s refugee, who made her unexpectedly have to think about just what exactly she was doing with Rhys and Owen.
And next week... WEEVILS! And the ep is written by Mickey from Doctor Who. Oooh... looking forward to it :)

Date: 2006-12-21 05:03 pm (UTC)I like the idea of being real, proper freshly ground coffee as opposed to some kind of frothy sweetened concoction, don't know why, maybe just because it looks neater =)
