So today I yet again tended to our wimpy turtle. I put the terrapin on a diet. I gave the mother a heart attack by telling her how big said reptiles could eventually grow, and then I rounded off the evening by acting as mediator to diffuse a row between one of the spawn and the parents. Oh, and yesterday I cleaned the turtle tank so it shined.

Dear Santa, I am expecting something good this year.

First off, I did actually like this ep. Though I had been put in a maudlin mood beforehand by having a glass of Baileys with the parents whilst we all went 'Awwww!' over baby turtles on Planet Earth.

Anyway, I remember the good old days of AtS. The beginning of Season 4 when we first saw Wesley. At the end of the previous season he had been a bit of a mess, rather broken and feeling let-down by his mates. He'd also slept with the enemy - oops. But Deep Down showed us that nothing makes a man a real man like morally ambiguous, f**ked-up and steamingly hot relations with someone he probably shouldn't.

So when Ianto swanned onto the scene in a snappy new suit, wearing one of those fancy blue-tooth ear-pieces and generally acting rather authoritative, in my mind that was the final proof that, yes, he and Jack were not just engaging in speed-knitting last week. How else did he convince Jack that he would be more useful on the scene than say Tosh. (Receptionist versus tech/computer guru? Please.)

I like Eugene. So very normal yet genuinely nice. After all that's happened with the rest of the team you kind of expect there to be a lot of anger/hurt under all the smiles, but with Eugene he was just what he purported to be. Yes he had his Daddy issues, but he seemed relatively open about them, which was refreshingly healthy.

I also liked his friends, particularly Gary. They were portrayed as flawed and human, but at the end of the day again not actually bad people. Yes Gary was thoughtless and greedy when it came to the alien eye, but he did actually learn from and regret his actions. 'I miss him!' *pets him*

Er, not at all sure what to make of the Dad singing Danny Boy at the funeral. I'll reserve judgment for when I'm not watching slightly tipsy. Though slightly tipsy and after being softened by cute baby turtles getting battered by a cruel sea (*sniffle*), the song itself might have been toe-curlingly cheesy but Eugene's reaction to it seemed nicely done.

Owen - still Owen. Snarky as always.

Ianto - has changed his suit and he disapproves of people assuming the person they hit are ok, but beyond that he didn't do much either.

Gwen - yeah yeah, I get it, the world loves Gwen because she is so kind and all that. Even if she did need to get her life saved AGAIN because she couldn't cross a frickin' road without getting into trouble *sigh*

Tosh - oh poor Tosh. You got, what, two words this ep?

Jack - turned up long enough to send Gwen away for the weekend so he and Ianto could have the Hub to themselves for 48 hours. Oh come on, I can't be the only person thinking that.

...

Next week's preview looked more fun, if only because it looks like it might actually involve Torchwood. Owen seems to be up for getting 'more depth' a la The Ghost Machine. Whilst I don't trust the writing, I trust the actor and am looking forward to seeing him trying something a bit more complex than snark.

And Jack tells someone he had died twice. I want to watch the preview again because I can't tell if he's talking to Owen/Ianto/some other bloke who landed on that plane.

Did he say it or sing it?
