I have finally seen it...
May. 1st, 2004 07:55 pmSo, slept in late. Surprise surprise. Wandered downstairs to discover that Time Bomb had arrived. (**huggles to
gingerpig). So, accompanied by my morning cup of tea, I settled down to drool over watch this latest offering from the Whedonverse.
1) Wes may be insane. But he is also so, so pretty this episode. Plus, he was nuzzling that book at the beginning. Seriously. I want to be that book. It's not fair...
2) I love Gunn. Seriously. That guy has been in Hell for the past two weeks, and he comes back to zero welcome and let-up in workload, and without a peep of complaint, he knuckles down and gets to it. But this time, on his terms. And it was wonderful to see him really back in the fight, refusing live in shades of grey anymore. He didn't think the lady should sign the contract, and he didn't give a ferret's arse as to who knew that.
Also, I am very, very impressed with how he's looking out for his friends. Despite the gut stabbing incident, he still cares enough for Wes to be worried by the state the guy was in this week. The fact that he didn't just forget Wes' state the moment he left the office, but later went and brought it up with Lorne speaks volumes. And I like to imagine that he was also watching rather closely when Angel quizzed Wes on Illyria during the board meeting, just making sure Angel doesn't say something utterly absurd and/or push Wes a little too hard.
3) Angel. Quite a lot going on with him this week.
Friends-wise - From the looks of things, he's decided to give Wes space and not crowd him. However, despite the fact that this obviously not the best course of action, this is not done out of malice or indifference, but actually trying to do the right thing by Wes. He wants/needs Wes at his back, as was shown by his pep talk in 'Origins'. In that talk, he also showed concerns over Wes' attachment to Illyria, and from his conversations in this ep, I'd say those concerns haven't lessened or gone away with the removal of the mind-rewrite. Angel still cares about Wes, he doesn't want him getting hurt by Illyria, it's just that he's a little distracted and also, yes, feeling a bit awkward about speaking too bluntly after the events of 'Origin'.
I wonder if he's visited Wes in his office or whether he's only seen Wes when the guy's on his 'catatonic, impatient shuffle' mode.
Fight-wise - I have no idea why Angel did what he did at the end of the ep, but I don't think we're seeing a return to dark or beige Angel a la Season 2. He wouldn't do that, I hope, especially since he knows the price people have paid for him to get back on his path. Cordelia came back simply to make sure he didn't give up. Fred died because she wouldn't leave him even though he led them all into the belly of the beast. He's not going to forget those sacrifices anytime soon.
Two lines are ringing in my head at the moment. Can't remember them exactly, but they're something like...
"You have incredible power at your fingertips, and you quibble at the price."
"The trick with Wolfram and Hart is, don't let them make you play their game. You make them play yours."
Angel and co. are currently in the middle of THE Apocalypse, the 1000 year battle between good and evil that has been raging for quite a while now without the good guys' being made aware of the fact. In other words, it's the kind of battle where you're going to have to lose a few battles if you want to win the war.
The good guys are not doing well. Angel has lost Doyle, Cordelia, Connor, and Fred. All in just 3 years. He needs more power, and I think Illyria's right. Wolfram and Hart have it. Ideally, he needs to get hold of it, and then use it against the SP's themselves.
Also, Hamilton's expression at the end was not an overly happy one. He looked puzzled, a little thrown.
Puzzled is good.
I think he and the SP's were expecting a little battle persuading Angel to toe the line - which would also be a wonderful distraction and time waster, no? But instead, Angel's simply turned round and apparently gone, 'okay'.
I think Angel has got something planned, and he basically took a pre-emtive move this week. The ball's in his court, this time it's the SP's who have to wait and see what he'll do next.
Dinner's just been called, so I'll sign off for now.

Date: 2004-05-01 12:52 pm (UTC)On Time Bomb Itself Im mostly "meh", not enough happening in it, and they took way to long to get to the time jumping, and cute as skittery Wes was, it sort of came out of the blue, although Its more how Id expect season 3 Wes to act under those circumstances, pre bad assness.
speaking of dinner, I should go shower and make mine, oh and watch the documetary I taped on the Tsars while I was out, do I know how to party on a Saturday night or what? :)

Date: 2004-05-01 03:18 pm (UTC)I agree with you that skittery Wes did seem somewhat sudden. Still love him and all his rumpled, book molesting scruffiness. But yeah, it did kinda come out of the blue. It would have helped if we could have seen more of his reaction after he shattered the Window of THingy - then at least we could get where he was coming from.
