Franz f**king Ferdinand!
Aug. 25th, 2006 12:37 amFirst off, no, I didn't get to meet any of the lads. So obviously there were no pics. However for those of you who are curious, I suggest you check out any of the #_daily coms (for eg
alex_dedicated/
bob_daily) since there was at least one photographer there and the pics are already doing the rounds!
My companions in crime were
bouncymonkey, and what she doesn't know about bands probably isn't worth knowing; her slightly bemused friend;
princess_s who came along purely to see what on earth I kept on squeeing about;
vampirefever who know NOTHING about Franz but came because we plied her with alcohol. We were a happy happy bunch, particularly me and monkey who actually knew individual band member's names, oooh.
A moment's silence though for
serineannan and friend - who also came along but sadly we didn't get to meet up with them *sniffle* Next time...
The Gig:
We came in late, so missed Tapes 'n' Tapes. I got one text which called them 'dire'. So I'll reserve judgement for now. The changeover was a good half-hour, and possibly it was the wait that meant the crowd throughout was relatively subdued. At least for a Franz gig. They did dance and bounce, but it was less mad than I expected. Anyway, in no particular order, my memories of the gig.
(1) Bob. Let me repeat that; BOB! He still had the beard and had returned to his all black attire. He was smiling away at the crowd, at times looking suspiciously like he was grooving. At one point he stood facing Paul, his bass slung over the back of his neck so the fingerboard was facing us and still playing. You show-off, Bob, please never stop.
(2) Alex/Bob. For some reason I was expecting Alex and Nick to be doing their usual thing of looks and crossing guitars etc etc. But actually they were fairly mild, Nick seemed to be happy just generally bouncing around, mucking about with Paul and Andy on his side of the stage.
princess_s admitted she was wondering why there was so much RPS, when they started on The Fallen. And Alex does that thing where he drops to his knees and leans forward just so, so his nose is right. by. Bob's. fingerboard, waiting for Bob to start his basic riff of the song. He knows full well what it looks like and he played it up very nicely, topping it off with a not-at-all-innocent look up through his lashes that from a viewpoint over Bob's left hip was quite something. By which point I was content, and
princess_s was going 'Ohhh, I get it'.
(3) Obviously THE MUSIC! I can't remember the order or every song, but the set included: This Boy; Do You Want To; Come on Home; Tell Her Tonight; Van Tango; Shopping for Blood; Do You Want To; Take Me Out; The Fallen; Dark of the Matinee; Evil and a Heathen; Walk Away; Darts of Pleasure; Lynsey Wells; Jacqueline; Michael; This Ffire; Outsiders;
x. Van Tango - brilliant. It was Nick's first solo of the evening, and I haven't heard it in a while so it was a joy to see it live. Alex came over to do a quick check, and then Nick was off playing his guitar a million miles an hour and dancing/singing as only Nick can.
x. Shopping for Blood - I thought they'd dropped it from their sets, so I totally wasn't expecting to hear it. But it is one of my favs, so happily cheered to hear the immortal words 'I am the new scottish gentry...'
x. Take Me Out - WASN'T THE BIGGEST SONG OF THE EVENING. Dude, I was surprised. Sure the crowd went nuts, but not insane. No. That honour was saved for The Fallen.
x. The Fallen - Great song, see above. Plus Alex/Bob. Possibly there were other more fun moments, but from my vantage point this was the only one I saw clearly. The crowd was fantastic, everyone joining in with Nick's 'woo-hoo' and raising the roof with cat calls and whatever else fitted in.
x. Darts of Pleasure - Bob didn't sing. He had a microphone but most certainly wasn't saying 'Ich heisse-'. He spoke something out of time, as if to prove that NO I AM NOT SINGING THEY CAN'T MAKE ME and then after the first few times didn't even bother pretending and went back to rocking out with his bass.
x. Outsiders - saved for the encore, and the room cheered en masse when we heard those opening chords. And, I think it's a first, WE GOT A BRASS SECTION. No plethora of drummers, nope, we got a trumpet, trombone and such, all playing their chords in time with the guitars. There was also another dapper chap on an extra drum. Need I tell you it was sensational? It was sensational. Plus, hey, trumpets!!
(4) Outsiders. Worth mentioning twice. We had the unexpected brass section, all of them blasting away, adding a very cool new edge to the sound of the song. And, yes, there was Andy Knowles, looking as always as though he was sewn into those jeans. Happy happy times.
(5) Paul. From songs I've watched, I'm used to Paul only really chiming in for the choruses of certain songs. But this time he was surprisingly vocal, which was great. In particular during Outsiders, he was having a whale of a time working the crowd up during the prolonged drum solo. Plus the porn 'tache is gone, huzzah!
(6) This Ffire. What an experience. It is clearly their signature closing tune, and everyone knew it and nothing was held back. And, surprise surprise, Alex decided yet again to plop down into the audience. He was nowhere near me, but you could see Bob and Nick's 'Oh there he goes again' smiles of amusement, as well as security hastily converging with 'Oh shit not again' expressions to haul him back out. He emerged grinning and looking unscathed, and the song finished in true style.
(7) That glass of apple juice/whiskey. Andy had slipped offstage for This Ffire, but when they went for the final bow Alex gestured him to come back out. In the meantime, Bob had picked up his glass of juice/whiskey and was taking a few sips. Andy promptly took the glass out his hand so he could join on the end of the line, and after the bow generously handed it down to one of the audience as a keepsake. Bob's expression of 'But... my drink!' as he watched his glass leave the stage was both priceless and adorable.
In summary, maybe not one of Franz's most insane moshing crowd, but certainly a crowd who were pleased as punch to see them and gave them as warm a reception as can be expected on a weekday evening. I certainly loved every second and utterly want to do it again.
Though, on a more personal note, I guess my highlight came before the actual gig.
The Oxford.
The Oxford is a nice 'pub'/restaurant almost opposite the venue. We all met up there for drinks and food before going in.
vampirefever and I at one point were discussing how, post the demise of AtS, we've found ourselves moving more into RPS than another TV show. She was explaining some of the F1 drivers, and I was trying to explain why Franz generates so much fiction.
In any case, the place was filling and the background chatter volume rising.
bouncymonkey was sitting opposite me and I was contemplating the bottom of my glass when I thought she said 'Oh my god... Bob.'
Considering that the doors opened in mere minutes, my first throught was that my Franz obsessed brain had just misheard a similar-sounding phrase, and I looked up to ask her to repeat it, only to see her staring at me with wide eyes and to tell me 'LOOK RIGHT.'
So I looked left and had the shock of my life when I found myself looking right. at. him. He was standing barely a metre away, facing me, and at that moment there was nothing at all obstructing the view. ;lsdakfjdgoiba;sredoitewa;hbngv.
Of course, being English, me and
bouncymonkey promptly buried our noses in our glasses and desperately tried to look as though it was of no concern at all that ROBERT FUCKING HARDY WAS MERE FEET AWAY FROM US.
Anyway, he was there with his prettily-dressed lass, and when the waiter buzzed up he asked for a table for two. And off they went to enjoy their supper only two tables away.
Oh heaven. Oh the conflict. On the one hand, what could be better? An hour or so of good food, a nice drink, great company, and a frankly spectacular view. But on the other, considering he was there for a personal thing, you didn't want to stare too much. I did try to concentrate on conversation and my pals, but I'm not entirely sure how well I succeeded.
Serious distraction/entertainment did also come in watching the waiter, who rushed back to the chef and promptly did a full-on fanboy squee/flail. The chef looked blankly back at him, and you could see the waiter grinning away and gesticulating and basically going 'It's BOB from Franz fucking Ferdinand!' The waiter attended on Bob hand and foot, Bob barely had to raise his gaze from the menu and the waiter would materialise calm and apparently impersonal by their table. He was the perfect Jeeves. But we got to see the fanboy once he got back to the kitchens, you could see him put every order from Bob's table to the top of the queues, at one point plucking a free barmaid from the bar to go and make their coffee. Oh to be a star.
On our table a kind of quiet implosion was going on, with me basically floating off into la la land, and
bouncymonkey attempting to explain to our bemused companions who the scruffy blonde was.
vampirefever: Oh. *looks over at him* No I only slash pretty boys. Nico's pretty, and, from the outside, to me, he [Bob] is just a scruffy boy.
Pfffft.
Did Bob know he'd caused such a flurry? Quite probably. Considering that the 'OMG BOB!' had been uttered loud enough to cut through background babble by someone basically sitting right beside him, he must have known we knew who he was.
princess_s later commented that he repeatedly looked over at our table.
The final touch came when another figure passed by.
LB: *kicks under table* Do you know who Parker is?
BM: Yes.
LB: Parker's just joined them!
BM: Oooh.
VF: Who?
LB: Parker.
VF: ...
LB: He's the sound technician.
VF: You know the name of the sound technician?!
LB: *blush*
Anyway, no, we didn't go up, didn't seem the right kind of time to do so. Eventually Bob and the lady left, Bob wielding a serious umbrella like walking stick, leaving us to generally flail with a bit more freedom despite Parker and his friend staying behind.
My general conclusions are that the pictures DO NOT DO HIM JUSTICE. Oh that boy is so lovely in the flesh it is unreal, and good lord but he is skinny. I've heard about cameras adding ten pounds or whatever it is, but it really was ridiculous how slender he looked in real life. For those of you wondering, he was in that typical beige jacket, white tee-shirt, slacks and sneakers combo, though the jacket and tee got ditched for the actual gig. It was frankly surreal to suddenly see him out of the blue like that, LOL!
In any case, I blame Bob for us missing the supporting act. He didn't leave until 8.30, and there was no way we were leaving before him. So, sorry Tapes 'n' Tapes, but maybe next time.
My companions in crime were

Date: 2006-08-25 02:09 am (UTC)And oh boy did I ogle. Often unintentionally since my mind would wander, one second I was contemplating my glass, and the next I was having to refocus because Bob was turning round and somehow I'd wound up staring at their table again, LOL! I think if he'd maybe been with the whole band we might have risked sidling over at the end of their meal, or at least wished them a good gig, but it was obviously a personal thing so we left them to it.
But hey. I've had my Bob moment, I'm not complaining! =)

Date: 2006-08-25 02:21 am (UTC)I also found the fact that he had a REAL umbrella, not one of these mini-foldaway ones oddly endearing. He is such an old-fashioned boy in some ways *luffs*

Date: 2006-08-25 01:39 pm (UTC)Outsiders is my favourite song of theirs live. It's just...so amazing. Especially when it breaks down and then goes, "la, la la la la la..." etc. They don't do that on the album and it makes me sad.
And Bob is skinny! It's so freaky! I guess because the others are sticks, he looks a bit chubby. The first time I saw him in person I freaked out because he was so small!
Also, Parker is teh sex. I've said hi to him every time I saw him, and he's like, "O.o..." I think he's scared that he has fangirls.
Anyway...enough babbling from me.
no subject
Date: 2006-08-25 07:07 pm (UTC)Outsiders was clearly such a crowd favourite - and it was amazing that yet again they managed to come up with something new, when the trumpets et al came onstage there was just such a buzz.
I think any hopes I had of moving on from my *ahem* slight Bob fixation was quickly scuppered when I actually saw the poor chap. You just wanted to wrap him up and feed him cookies, so so adorable :)
Heh, poor Parker. I suppose when you take up the post of sound tech you expect to be able to sit back and laugh as your friends get mobbed, you don't expect the hoardes to turn on you. But honestly, he is very pretty, you can't blame us, LOL!

Date: 2006-08-25 01:47 pm (UTC)And someone on my flist told me yesterday an LJ friend of theirs was in the pub as well when Bob was there! LOL. So you guys were not alone. Or maybe this girl was with your group? The internets are small. But yes, I laughed at her comment of "he ate and had a latte! he's such a rockstar!" Fun times.
(I fully support his eating, though! He needs to eat. Lots.)
I'm happy you had such a good time, LB!
no subject
Date: 2006-08-25 07:12 pm (UTC)There were a few LJ-ers in our party, but the pub itself was full by the end of the evening, so it's quite possible there was another small LJ implosion going on at a table near ours, LOL!
Heh, yes, we did notice the coffee. Mainly because the waiter zipped past us to practically grab the barmaid by the scruff of the neck and throw her in the direction of the coffee machine. You could all but hear him telling her 'No no no, use the good stuff!'
We all shook our heads in disapproval. Coffee? Not tea? Tsk tsk, Bob... ;)
And thank you - it was my first Franz gig, and I'm so thrilled it all went so well!

Date: 2006-08-25 05:10 pm (UTC)Oh man, Shopping For Blood ;__; I've always wanted to scream "Shop shop shop" repeatedly and clap my hands along with Nick. YOU'RE SO DAMN LUCKY! And Van Tango! *SPAZZ*
BRASS SECTION IN OUTSIDERS *FLAILS* lolz
The chef looked blankly back at him, and you could see the waiter grinning away and gesticulating and basically going 'It's BOB from Franz fucking Ferdinand!'
LOLOLOLOL awwwn waiter!fanboy <3

Date: 2006-08-25 07:20 pm (UTC)So I really did squee when I recognised the opening drum beat and bass riff.
Ditto Van Tango. I wasn't so taken with it on CD, but I fell in love with it when I saw recordings of it performed live. Such a great song to dance to, and Nick just shines when he sings that one =)
Outsiders... no words. Just so so brilliant. Trombone. Trumpet. I think there was a sax as well. Heaven.
Heh. The waiter helped complete the picture, such a comfort to see we weren't the only fans flailing in the room!

Date: 2006-08-25 05:48 pm (UTC)BUT OMG!!!!!! how freaking amazingly lucky are you?!?!! haha, i think you did an excellent job at controlling yourself in front of bob. i would have probably passed out. lol. And had it been for me, i wouldn't have left either until after they left. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I had great laughs reading about the waiter. I would have LOVED to have seen his espression when he saw he had BOB to attend. haha

Date: 2006-08-25 07:26 pm (UTC)The waiter was a joy to watch, he had a grin going from ear to ear as he told every staff member near him who the scruffy blonde was, LOL! I think what I found exceptionally endearing was how he could wipe it all off and be calm, impersonal professional quiet-voiced indifference the second he had to actually wait on Bob. But three steps later when he left immediate earshot and the fanboy was back with us, LOL!
bob?
Date: 2006-09-01 03:44 pm (UTC)Really enjoyed the gig though was kind of frustrated that you were like 3 meters down - and couldn't come and see you :( Well, heading to Brummy on Saturday, just when you've left ... we have to arrange something!
Re: bob?
Date: 2006-09-02 12:46 am (UTC)I did spend quite a while scanning the balcony in the rather folorn hope of recognising a distant head, but the angles were all wrong. Mew.
I've finally reclaimed the mobile off hte parents and got a batch of late messages, including your query about Monday. Sadly, yes, I was. We really do have to fix something! *hugs*
