I do love Radio 4 somedays; Recs
Jul. 14th, 2006 12:52 amI was going to post a whine. But I had the radio on, and 15 minutes later I was smiling. Perfect bedtime story. Thank you the BBC. I had a similar experience on Tuesday - the afternoon play leaving me squee-ing. Yeah, I'm easily pleased, but hey, it leaves me happy. So passing on two radio recs. (You should be able to hear these for the next six/seven days.)
(1) Brighton Rocks: My Beautiful Lambretta.
Brighton Rocks is a short, funny, and sweet 15 minutes. Based at the time of the Brighton Mod/Rocker riots in the 60s. Two lads meet when they're both chucked in the back of a police van. Their lives diverge somewhat after that, well, kind of. I have to admit I don't know much about the whole Mod/Rocker thing, other than what I deduced from this anacdote from Alex about when, as an 8 year old, he was floored by a Mod for not being able to name 5 mod bands. But in any case, I thoroughly enjoyed this.
(2) Star Man
This was Tuesday's Afternoon Play. It melted my heart, and broke it a wee bit. You have schoolboys, the confusion of first love, and a healthy dollop of lovely father!angst. As the website says: On a visit home to Glasgow for his father's funeral, Tom's thoughts go back to 1974. As a 15-year-old schoolboy, he was fascinated by stars - astronomical stars in the night sky, glamorous rock-stars like David Bowie, and would-be local stars like the charismatic and sexually ambiguous Danny, who he meets one day on the bus.
