A year ago I woke up in South America to find the purely Spanish-speaking maid trying to relate to me a telephone message. 'Terroristas', 'hay bombas' and 'Londres' were enough even for me. I seriously loved LJ that day, not only could I check everyone was all right, but it was wonderful to see the spirit coming out of Britain in wake of the attack. Reposting some of the thoughts I read:
"Speaking on behalf of the people of Essex, we are standing by you the peoples of Londonia in these trying times. Mainly because Suffolk won't swap places with us." - [livejournal.com profile] chrisisiddall

"No, really, we're not scared. You can try and kill as many people as you want, you're still going to lose because we're just that damn British. Also? Notice those docks and airports? Still open to the freedom loving folk. Suck it, bitch." - [livejournal.com profile] lithium_doll attempting to summarize Ken Livingstone's speech.

"It's hard to panic the British. They've dealt with the Blitz, the IRA, the Silurians, the Zarbi, the Daleks, the Cybermen..." - [livejournal.com profile] annlarimer

"I'll repeat what I say somewhere below: I work with some Muslims. They're furious about the attacks, and about what these extremists do in the name of Islam. Every Muslim I've met who tries hard to follow the faith has been kind, generous, gentle and Good. Al Quaeda have done huge harm to the Muslim community in Britain and around the World - but I want to say here that there's people out there who know the real score. Good is good.

Peace and love to you, wherever you are." - [livejournal.com profile] tyrell

My thoughts and prayers are with all those whose lives were changed that day.

Love how these comments really capture the spirit of the day at the time, and the attitude a year on. I remember the worry for friends and family like it was yesterday, but also the determination not to let it affect us. I observed the two minute silence today, but it won't get me down. I won't let the terror win, and I'm glad to see that it hasn't. The people and families of London make Britain proud.
