A bat has just flown into my bedroom. It was flapping about and has now settled on a high shelf.

Any idea how to get it out hte open window? It's so TINY AND OMG SO CUTE!!!

ETA: I think we just broke every rule in the book. But it's gone safe and sound anyway. It was hangiing off my LotR poster and we were looking at each other for a while. IT WAS SOOO ADORABLE!! I WANT ONE!! *happy sigh*

My advice is to take pictures of the wee little bat! And then, um, leave the window open and hope for the best? Or maybe the camera will frighten it.

This one was the most lovely thing ever. SO TINY! With a little white/black snout and it snuffled the air and had this wings all tucked up around it. Ah, made my evening =)

Admittedly for a while I was just standing in the middle of the room trying to remind myself that these creatures have excellent sonar and wouldn't crash as the wee thing zipped past mere centimeters from my nose, LOL!

There is a picture book I read to the kids during storytime last week called "Bats at the Beach" by Lies. It was very cute. They have to wear moon-tan lotion and they roast bug-mallows. :)

Awwwwwwwwww! That sounds so sweet :) Another picture book I'd recommend is Stella-luna; the tale of an orphaned fruit bat who gets raised by birds. The pictures are brilliant :)

Bats, specially wee ones, are cute and very intelligent, but their teeth are sharp.

Glad you got him/her out before bed, though. The flapping around at night would drive you insane. And they squeak...

I couldn't tell whether it had settled behind the ceramic pot because a) it was trying to hide from me, or b) it was settling down to roost for the night. In either case it gave me the most put out look before it flapped away, LOL!

Oooh, I wouldn't mind sacrificing my room for a bat colony. There'd be lots of cute little batlings swooping around every evening, and we could sell the bat poop as fertilisers. Everyone wins! =)

Not early evening, but from dusk to pre-dawn...

The bat colony (flying foxes, actually) down the road glide by every evening, sometimes stopping in our trees to chatter -- incesstantly. While they're a lovely sight, they are worse than 13 year old girls with the noise and the mess. ;)

Maybe it's the time of year they try exploring to find new places to sleep? Honestly, we live quite a way from the meadow and river which is their usual haunt, so I have no idea what it was doing so low and in the city. Maybe it was a wee one and got lost *ponders* Oh it was adorable though!

Bats are neat. We used to get them in the library all the time until they finally figured out where the hole was and plugged it up.

Most of them were small, like the palm of your hand, but the one time I was sitting in the back room, minding my own business and I thought I saw something go swooping by my head (bats don't fly, they swoop). I looked around, didn't see anything and went back to my work until the bat came swooping in the other direction about 3 inches from my face.

Big bat. Very big bat. With his wings spread out, he was probably 9-12 inches wide. I carefully waited until he swooped away from me, grabbed my bag and shut him in the back room. Then we called DPW who made asses out of themselves by grabbing a broom and a trash can and yelling 'here bat'. After that didn't work, we called animal control, who caught it in 3 minutes in a net and let it outside.

Sometimes at night, I can see them swooping around in my backyard eating bugs.

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! And that didn't work? No? You stun me, LOL!

I've only ever seen the big ones at the local zoo. Can't imagine what it'd be like to have one flapping past that close to you - eeee! They're supposed to have superb sonar, able to fly in the dark etc. But they do tend to look all over the place when in the air, and it's hard to remember that when they're zipping past inches from your face, LOL!
