Regarding icons. Right, save the icon you want onto your computer. There are a few rules for this (quoting LJ): File size must be less than 40k Image dimensions must be no larger than 100x100 pixels File format must be either PNG, GIF or JPG
Then, go to your 'user info' page, to the main menu at top and go: Manage >> Userpics. Scroll to bottom of page and there's the l'il box of icon uploading joy =) Pick your icon, and give it a keyword - helps you remember which icon is which. As well as letting you credit the person who made the icon if you got off LJ.
