Oct. 7th, 2005 10:19 amSaw Serenity. Loved it. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5. *beams*
I also came out mildly heartbroken. I was always a little fond of Mal anyway having been completely smitten by N. Fillion last year. But that aside, I really had no particular attachments to any of the characters. Yet I was genuinely very, very upset when Wash bit the bullet. Less so when Book went, mainly because he'd only had one scene beforehand. I got that Book meant a great deal to the others and I appreciated what his death meant to them. But it was Wash I was still mourning on the bus ride home. He and Zoe were meant to go off into the sunset eventually and live happily every after... *sniffle*
Rivers. Yeah, she was cool and fun to see. You just knew she was going to save the day, you were just waiting for the right trigger. No surprise that it was Simon.
Simon... hmm... I think if I hadn't already seen Wes, I would have liked the neat, softly spoken, devoted character. However for me he was the Wesley-esque character of the piece, and for me there is no substitute to Wesley. He was okay, but by no means one of my favourites. No, my favourite characters of the film are without a doubt *drumroll*...
Captain Mal and Kaylee. Mal because, hey, he's Mal. Kaylee because she was just herself, I wanted her to get Simon because she clearly wanted him so badly. And whose heart didn't melt when she complained about having nothing but batteries for months, and who didn't cheer her on when she made the firm decision that actually 'Screw this! I'm going to live!' =)
And special mention has to go to Jayne. Grenades. *pets him* He's just one big violent kid with guns really.
Three of us went to see this film.
princess_s - has seen all of Firefly - she loved it.
Me - knows general gist of Firefly through talk and conventions - I loved it
My put-upon housemate - she watched all of Buffy, watched a little of Angel, and had never even heard of Firefly - she loved it, even though normally anything 'sci-fi' really doesn't do anything for her. She and I spent a good hour or so at home afterwards, discussing the characters and who could do what for the sequel and the sequel to the sequel, as we both agreed there must be more!
Without spoilers; it's a fun fun ride. There are nasty bad guys of the kind you can unashamedly wish a horrid death on. There's the slightly more grey characters who you're not entirely sure what they deserve. There's lots of laughter and pippy one-liners. Good 'oh yeah' scenes. There's some nasty, 'it's just allergies' inspiring moments too.
