SPN, bring on the heartache...
Oct. 24th, 2013 12:16 amYou know what? I enjoyed that :) Admittedly I'm a little upset on the characters' behalf, but mostly I'm generally just really intrigued. We're 3 eps in now, so the set-up for the reason of the season is still well underway - there's plenty more to come!
Right, so first off, as a Dean/Cas shipper I am thoroughly content with how that played out.
1) The death scene. Just as the fanfics imagined: the tears, the 'No', the cupping of the face, all good staples of the Heartbreaking Loss of Love One scene. And then the "Never do that again!" statement from Dean. If we thought 'I need you' was the main way Dean said 'I love you' I would like to challenge our previous assumptions :)
2) Sam and Cas and Dean. I loved that Sam was every bit as anxious to find Cas as Dean was, Cas is his friend, his family too, profound bond or not. I also liked that Cas (after immediately calling for Dean) noticed Sam - after all, when he last heard, Sam was unwell and in need of help. And I loved that he was looking forward to getting instructions from both Winchesters on how to be human.
3) The final scenes. That was brutally effective blackmail. Basically being told "I will kill Sam unless you exile Cas." There was no real choice there. I do wish Dean had been honest with Cas as to why he was asking Cas to go, because Cas would have understood and would have insisted he go if the alternative was letting Sam die. BUT, if that happened then frankly we'd have no season because this is obviously part of the overall set-up for whatever is coming later on (Hello, Bart...)
What's going to be sad is that I imagine Sam is going to be equally upset that Cas isn't sticking around. You just know that whatever excuse Dean uses ("He wanted to go,"/"He didn't want to lead angels here"/whatever), Sam is not going to be convinced and just look reproachful. They've both seen that the angels are seriously out for the kill. After the whole talk about being happy and being a family, now Dean's got to try and convincingly lie to his brother about why casting one of them out to the wolves is a good idea. Ouch.
But of course, the big BIG question is what on earth is Zeke up to. Why did he save Castiel to then to do this.
Obviously he's hiding something, there's clearly some very much bigger reason about why he cannot be found by the other angels. Whatever it is, he's clearly terrified. Is he not who he says he is? Does he have history with Bart? What was he up to pre-fall?
And again, how does Cas factor into this? Zeke knew the angels were on Cas' trail from the get-go and he knew Dean's intention would be to bring Cas 'home'. What changed? And again, why save Cas at all? If he needs Cas alive, then why throw him back out into the open where he knows he's just as likely to get killed again? Or was saving Cas a moment of weakness, something he wouldn't have done if he'd had time to fully think it through except that was his brother gutted like a fish in front of him.
So many questions. I am looking forward to finding out the answers.
And as a final thought: I actually thought Cas and April (before it all went pear shaped) were wonderfully sweet. Cas' first real kiss, and their smiles and giggles and his relief (and pride) at finally being able to do something good. Oh bless. Don't worry, Cas, I'm sure she won't be the last. Though I do wish we would have had time to have Sam and Dean give you the birds and the bees talk (including protection) before you moved on. Ah well, what else is fanfic for...
ETA: a final thought as I climb the proverbial wooden hill. Just passed this gifset of the closing scenes.
OK, so Cas has presumably just been in the shower or otherwise engaged. In any case, Zeke has presumably had opportunities before now to speak to Dean alone. (Though this may be applying too much logic to the timescale of the scene). Does this mean that something in this exchange was what tipped the scale for Zeke? In which case what. Only things I can come up with is Cas' comment that the boys will be great teachers, or from Zeke's point of view meaning that Cas will be watching him like a hawk and may catch him out. Or at the very least, seriously curtail on his alone time with Dean. OR, was it that comment of Cas still having his angel blade. (Which actually he didn't, since it was left in his coat). Had Zeke forgotten until that moment that Cas was not just a human, but a human armed with an angel blade who could theoretically do damage. Ho hum...
