Last weekend I succeeded in seeing a Hiddles-free film *is proud* And truth be told it was brilliant film; if Hugo is still showing in 3D anywhere near you, do try and find a way to see it. Visually it is just beautiful, the opening 3D shot of snow falling from the sky before you gently swoop down into and through Paris is breathtaking.

The cast are all superb, Sir Ben Kingsley of course wonderful as the crochety toymaker. It's an old-fashioned fairy tale of sorts, one of those films you can't talk about too much as the mystery is what makes the tale (but rest assured all questions are answered). Suffice to say it starts with post-WW2 Paris, and a boy living in the walls of the railway station where he looks after the clocks. It all goes from there.

Also: Am I the only one watching Eternal Law? I caught up with the series so far over the weekend; the ease of doing so says something about the 'depth' of this series but I am thoroughly enjoying it so far. Sam West is having far, far too much fun as the cynical, weary angel-on-earth who's saddled with a new former-angelic-chorister sidekick.

So, yes, in some ways it is clichéd to high heaven, the acting/writing is frequently awkward, but for some reason every episode manages to have at least one moment that charms me. I like how what was expecting to the 'mystery' of the series did in the end get cleared-up pretty quickly (Mrs Sherindon's wings, the tale of Hannah).

Plus of course it passed the acid test when it took on that topic which is my Achilles heel, namely adoption. Although it did grate that the parents were consistently "adoptive" parents rather than just parents, I gave it the benefit of the doubt considering it was in court and supposedly swamped in legal jargon. And in the end I felt well done by. Hats-off that they acknowledged that yes adoption is tough, particularly when you get a young child rather than a babe, with far too many demons for someone so young. And equally, hats off that they also showed how rewarding it can be nevertheless, with both parents still completely smitten with "their" son. And yes, I might have had a bit of dust in my eye when that letter was finally read out in court. Shuttup I'm a sap.

I'm also not too annoyed by Hannah since they have sort-of toned back the romance between her and Zac. Instead I like seeing her in her own right, like her birthday cheeseburger and bucks fizz breakfast. I hope she gets some storyline beyond just being the abandoned love of one of the male leads.

And sooo... the clock to the apocalypse has started ticking. Is it because of Zac and Hannah? Or is it down to the rookie having a moment of doubt? Or is it something new offscreen.

I'm not going to lose sleep over it, but I am looking forward to getting some answers which I trust to be provided in good time :)

AND FINALLY! Because I was this close to managing a Hiddles-free post...

It seems another vampire movie is being planned, though from the looks of it it's a more artie/indie affair that folks are hoping will rescue the genre from Twilight. Anyway! One of the vamps was supposed to be Mssr Fassbender, which actually I can picture very well. Unfortunately he's had to bail due to his social diary being full - alas. In his place, however, they've snagged Tom Hiddleston. He'll be joining Tilda Swinton and John Hurt, so this could be veerry interesting...

Oh, I was planning on asking about Eternal Law myself. I'm absolutely loving it, it's just so different! I adore Tom and Zac's relationship (haven't ventured into angel slash yet!) and parts of it have made me and D just roar with laughter - particularly the bit about Mr Mountjoy as a kind of cosmic Katie Price and when Zac looked at the stained glass in York cathedral and said "Look! It's Terry!" Just wonderful... The wings look kind of awesome too, and I love how they end up drinking and smoking cigars on the top of the cathedral at the end of most episodes! I wasn't expecting much from it, being ITV, but I've been happily entranced... ;o)
