Supernatural - and lo! they do it again

lonelybritAh, I have to hand it to SPN. Yet again I had all but stopped watching, and then I caught the last ep (ep 19 of S6 I believe) and lo! here I am and I've just inhaled eps 16-19 in one sitting.
Once more, at the last hour, SPN has swum up into my interest. Those of you who have been watching from the beginning may need to give me a refresher on what I've missed.
As I've said before, try as I might, I just can't connect to the Winchesters themselves. Can't put my finger on why, I honestly don't think it's acting/writing/looks/whatever, it's just they aren't the characters for me.
BUT.
As, with season 4, throw in some fun angel and demon mythology and suddenly I'm hooked. Last time it was the sibling fighting between the angels and them having to decide whether to stick with the humans or their family. This time? Well oddly enough we're back to the angel war raging on unseen and all the fallout and consequences.
Oh, and Crowley of course. When I heard of his death that pretty much was the nail in the coffin, or so I thought, for SPN. And conversely, when there was a whiff that maybe he was still around I decided to give the show one last go. God I do love a sarcastic grumpy (evil) sod who really doesn't give a crap about anything, that speaks to me :) OT: Did anyone else clap with glee when he popped up on Doctor Who?
So, in summary, from eps 16-19 I am concluding thus:
x. Human souls are power houses. Brilliant for rejuvenating wounded angels (or presumably giving them extra oopma if they're already fit and healthy).
x. If hypothetically you were fighting a war and rather up against it (and by 'it' we mean Raphael) this extra power would be rather handy.
x. Which could lead to wonderful decisions like trying to mint some new souls by rewriting history (although note for future: this will not work because Fate is, well, Fate).
x. For some reason, torturing demons is another way of harnessing this 'soul' power.
x. So if the way to get access to soul power was to work in cahoots with a entrepreneurial demon (picking a name a random, let's call him Crowley), an angel might actually consider this a good course of action.
x. So in fact the phrase that comes to mind is 'Road to hell is paved with good intentions'. Oh Cas. I'm still not entirely sure what you're up to but considering that you're lying through your teeth to Dean and getting attacked by your most faithful lieutenant, this will cost you.
Yes, indeed, poor Cas. That scene where he was trying to explain to Sam and Dean what he's fighting for... oh dear. Talk about justifying yourself in advance, or rather trying to. He knows they won't agree with him when they find out.
But back to demons.
Can someone please remind me how torturing demons ties into harnessing the power of the soul? Also wasn't there some kerfuffle about purgatory? I remember Crowley wanted to be lord of it but I can't remember why.
I'm afraid I still haven't quite yet got the willpower to go back and rewatch/watch all the earlier eps so if anyone could be kind enough to enlighten me on what I've missed that would be grand!
Here's hoping there's not another long hiatus of d00m, after all there are only, what, 3 episodes left? Although it will kill me, I am sort of hoping for a nasty showdown between Cas and Dean because Dean's face when Sam and Bobby questioned his pet angel was a picture. And he was the one to bring up the whole 'Just cause you're blood doesn't make you family'. We've had Cas countless times mention his loyalty to his 'friends', it would be nice to hear it verbalised going the other way before it all gets shot down in flames.

Hmm, well it's definitely all about souls this year then. I wonder if demons have them, or indeed angels.
Poor Cas, I sense there may be troubles ahead for him.

Date: 2011-05-03 11:32 pm (UTC)I did feel bad for the Phoenix, it did seem a bit 'harsh' to class him a monster given what had happened to his family.
I can't remember who warned Cas to look at what he's becoming (might have been Rachael or Fate or both) but I do wonder if that wasn't a throwaway line. If humans can be corrupted to demons, then, assuming angels also have souls, what do we get if you successfully corrupt an angel. Would that just be Lucifer all over again or something new? Hmm. Well they've got a few more eps left so either it'll all be wrapped up or they'll leave it hanging to be continued in S7. Mibble.
