So there goes the computer, which finally died in a blaze of blue screens yesturday. And no, we hadn't backed things up because a) there wasn't a backup facility installed on it, which was very helpful, and b) by the time we realised this and tried to install, the machine was already dying. Ah well. Supposedly there's a chance the drive won't need to be formatted, but I've already bade a mental farewell to all my icons, fic, pics, etc etc.

On the plus side, my current fandom love being Franz, and most Franz items therefore being rather large vids and clips, most of that stuff was burned to CD a while back. Plus it is amazing how random scrolling through [livejournal.com profile] bob_daily and [livejournal.com profile] franz_hai will lighten your mood.

Another cheering factor was my mother sending me an email of supposedly real newspaper cuttings. Humans can be so entertaining.... )

I'm hoping someone here remembers their A-level-ish maths. Specifically pulleys - since my mind's gone blank and I have no books with me.

So you throw a light inextensible string over a smooth pulley, and yank on it - and you can pull with your entire bodyweight.

If the string then goes over two smooth pulleys, you can effectively pull with twice your body weight. (This ringing any bells? Is this correct?)

So if you have three pulleys then presumably you can effectively pull with a force three times your bodyweight, and because there's no friction etc, this will be true no matter how far apart the pulleys are or where they are in relation to each other? Anyone?
