So, I've just watched 'Power Play'
May. 18th, 2004 02:55 amI love my dead gay show. May the WB be trampled beneath the flippers of rabid mutated ardvarks. May their turkeys always be burnt on Thanksgiving. May hornets nest in their underpants. The bastards.
And again, one must wonder how/why/how Alyson ever lets that man out of her sight...
1) Angel/Wes = OTP4eva!!!
I think it was
wolfing who said something along the lines of: 'Wesley's Fred love met his Angel love. And his Angel love won hands down.'
Word.
When Wesley got what was apparently final proof that Angel was responsible for Fred's death, his instant response was to start thinking of a way to put Angel back on his path. Most importantly of all, he looked and sounded like he *believed* in what he was saying. It's been a while since I remember Wes being like that, having that old fire. Back in Season 4, before the mind rewrite, he was very cold, detached. It was like he did 'The Right Thing' only because he knew it *was* The Right Thing, the spark he had in Seasons 1/2/3 had died out. In the more recent episodes, Wes has been almost as much as shell as Illyria. Illyria's transformation into Fred in 'The Girl In Question' pissed him off, but again it was a cold anger. It didn't exactly kick him back into life, so to speak.
But threaten Angel and all of a sudden Wes is back in the game with a vengeance.
Oh. Did anyone else notice how his voice cracked just a little on the, 'Regardless of our actions', line?
*sniff*
Admittedly it does seem a little odd to hear such sentiments coming from Wes considering how Season 3 post-Forgiving went for him, but still. I think on the one hand Wes was looking at the bigger picture. He remembers that in the end he and Angel did rebuild their friendship, to the point where Angel was prepared to fight a demon to save his life (Sacrifice). Angel also didn't abandon Wes when he undid the mind rewrite in 'Origin'. So in the long run, yes, Angel has stuck by Wes in spite of their history.
On the other hand, I think it might be a little of what Wes said back in Pylea. "I need him to believe it." I think Wes needs to believe that Angel is capable of being so stalwart, which I find understandable considering how pretty much everything else Wes has cared/believed in has been mostly destroyed over the past few weeks. He shot the person he spent much of his life aspiring to in 'Lineage'. He lost the last person so far this season to bring out old, happy geeky Wesley in 'You're Welcome'. His reason for fighting died in 'Hole In The World. His own image of himself got shattered in 'Origin', which probably also affected a little his view on Fred herself... Wesley doesn't have much to hold onto right now, which may be why he was so determined not to give Angel up for lost this ep.
"I'm in."
**cries**
I suppose you could wonder why Wes took so long to voice his agreement, I have seen some people asking wouldn't it be more likely that it would be Wes who would first raise his hand, Spike second. And I can understand that, but I'm not too worried.
I think Wes does trust Angel, and from the way he said 'I'm in', I don't think the hesitation was because there was ever a question that he might say 'No'. More likely, I think Wesley was in a little shock that, finally, this here is the proverbial 'It'. This is the big final battle he always knew was probably waiting for him, but this is the first time he's actually been allowed to see what the plan is. All the prophecies he's translated, all the fights he helped fight, they've all been leading up to this, and he's only just had that pointed out to him. And once he's fully digested all the details, there's that wonderful hint of a smile, and it's onwards once more.
2) Illyria.
Okay. Like I said. I'm spoiler-free. But even so I'm getting very, very bad feelings about the fate of my boy in the next episode. Anvils are raining down like anything.
And Illyria is the biggest one.
She says she cares for no one. That no human's attention matters. She does not concern herself with with their petty interests.
But in this episode, I think she was starting to realise that actually it hurt when Wesley continually snubbed her the way he did. There was her slight frown during the conversation between Spike and Wes. And later she fell in right behind Wesley when they were all heading off after their talk with Drogen. Her expression when she realised she was a) still being ignored, and b) being actually excluded, was not a happy one.
So yeah, I felt sorry for her.
And yes. Big anvil. Because emotional angst is always rife on this show. And wouldn't it be oh so ironic/tragic/heartbreaking if what makes Illyria finally admit/show her first real emotion is the cause of it dying in front of her. And even more so if said cause is never actually aware of the genuine change in her. Which at the moment Wes isn't seeing because he's plain ignoring her.
3) Hamilton.
I love this guy. He's bad, he's evil, he can be genuinely a little scary... He's everything a liason to the SP's should be. A show can survive having a weak hero, so long as the baddy is believable. Sadly it doesn't work so well the other way round. And with Hamilton, I feel like I've finally got a baddy I can both love and hate, kind of like with Alan Rickman in Robin Hood, or Lilah during Seasons 3/4.
So yes. Very happy. Have good baddy. Have a good hero.
I love this show :)
