Right, have just finished a book that is nothing less than stunning and left me borderline tears for at least ten minutes after I'd actually put it down. Gorgeous writing, wonderful characters, all set during the Nigerian/Biafran civil war.

Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

She also wrote Purple Hibiscus, which I've also read and enjoyed but hands down I prefer this more recent production. I get the impression that this is the book she's been waiting to write for a while, and she mentions her family and what they have told her and what they survived. I've said before that I dislike being told I should love a character, I prefer to be shown them warts and all and then fall for them. Which is exactly what she does for all her characters her. They all have flaws, both readily apparent or only shown later, but it only highlights how remarkable they really are and how even the kindest soul can be caught out by war.

My mellow mood was also helped by the soundtrack in the background. If you like traditional, melancholic folk tunes that tell a tale, enjoy this one. Which is rare in that it actually has a happy ending.

The Dalesman's Litany - Maddy Prior & Tim Hart

And finally, I've just seen the first ep of Jeckyll. I take it I must have been out of town when it aired for what other reason can there be for the FL not being full of folks singing its praises :)
