Christmas went as well as could be hoped. Miraculously the annual family row hasn't yet materialised, or if it has I'm now safely away from it all so I don't really mind. Hah. We watched The Snowman and Father Christmas, as tradition dictates; I watched Doctor Who: The Runaway Bride as nerdom dictates; and I drank my body volume of wine, as Christmas dictates. All in all I did good =)

Also finally caught up with Torchwood. As everyone knows, this ep was written by Noel Clarke, aka Mickey from Doctor Who. I was hopeful as my brother recently watched the film Kidulthood, which Clarke also penned, and was very impressed - a not very common occurrence. And definitely I thought this week was one of the better eps, if only because Clarke has realised, unlike others, that Torchwood works best as a team. Emotionally, yes, Gwen and Owen were at the front. But everyone had their moments, clear roles within the group, and there was even a lovely hint of character continuity. Bliss.

So Ianto got to wear that dark shirt again, last glimpsed too briefly in Random Shoes. This time we got to ogle it properly, as well as enjoying Ianto actually getting to do useful stuff and generally being Jack's right-hand man for the ep. Yes, this shallow shallow fangirl was in heaven.

On a slightly deeper level, oh it was great having all the characters involved. This is how Torchwood should be. You had Tosh challenging Jack over the use of the weevil (though considering he has sacrificed a human child to save the world, this choice should come as less of a surprise to her), and you had her getting to really show off her computer skills in that lovely intercut scene of her and Mark.

Gwen. Oh Gwen. Again, when we are not being told that she is oh so perfect and all heart and we must LOVE HER OMG, I really really like her. Not least because Eve Myles is a great actress - that scene of her falling apart over the slice of pizza broke my heart, just so well done. Gwen has let the job get to her, possibly because she has compassion for everything, and it's painful watching her starting to go to pieces. I remember in the first ep deciding that Rhys was too nice to survive and that he was probably doomed. I'm now more sure of it, just because they now have the potential angst of Gwen never being forgiven, and having to live with what she's done to him. Retcon. *shivers*

Owen, yeah, I like him. In that he's just fascinating to watch. Not entirely sure whether I'd ever want to have tea with the guy, but he's such a fun character. Part of me wonders if he might be killed off in the finale, purely because the actor should clearly be going places, and he might be wanting to get out while the going's good and try other TV/film things before he gets typecast. And plotwise, well, again it would be a great source of angst. However I really hope he sticks around. Loved that we do get continuity of Owen missing Diane. He doesn't cry like Gwen does, but oh can we still tell that guy is hurting. And damn can he turn into a creepy so-and-so along the way. The final hiss at the weevils was great. What doesn't break you only makes you stronger; I really wouldn't want to mess with Owen right now.

Jack. Oooooh... Again, the hint that he really is envious of those who have the ability to die. Not entirely sure how to read the final hospital scene between him and Owen. Maybe it was rough love - knowing that Owen has to throw himself into Torchwood since there's nothing else left, or maybe it was the feeling that 'Well I have to keep on living without complaints, I don't have a choice, I expect the same from you.' Or maybe a bit of both.

Ianto. Dark suit. Eating grapes. Driving the SUV. Not much character development going on, beyond that he's definitely back to being part of the Torchwood team, at least in Jack's eyes. I'm not holding out much hope Ianto only doing all this for an agenda, I think it is now just that he lives for Torchwood as he has nothing else left. On the whole I was happy to just watch. The previews for next week make me squee. Ianto appearing to pull the gun on Owen to stop him meddling with the rift, and then another audio clip of him (He's still our leader.) and Owen (Not any more.) arguing about Jack. Interesting reversal of roles, and I can't wait to see what it's all about. In any case, it was nice seeing confirmation that Ianto really isn't the submissive as some perceive him to be, he knows his place when Jack is around, but remove Jack and Ianto will do what he deems best for Torchwood :)

And of course, I adored the pics from Barroman's civil cermony. Scott looked dashing in his suit, Barrowman wore a kilt *luffs*, Eve Myles and Naoko Mori looked gorgeous as always, Burn Gorman was adorable in a snappy suit and a baby carrier in one hand, and Gareth David-Lloyd was also sweet turning up with a large blue pressie tucked under one arm. I'm sure they all had a fantastic day.

Finally, Fic Rec: 5 Clichés That Shouldn't Have Happened In Any Fandom (But Make Sense With Torchwood) by [livejournal.com profile] keiko_kichi. Grade A crack!fic, includes MPreg, accidental selling of a TW team member into sexual slavery, and of course ALIENS MADE THEM DO IT!

Happy Christmas! :-)

Could you point me toward the pics of Barrowman's civil ceremony? I'm all curious now.

"Ianto as sub" is so bizarre to me. He's obviously used to being the one in charge of personal relationships. It's like he finds Jack a relief because he can finally trust someone else to not mess things up around him. I wonder how often Ianto has had the chance to be a YOUNG man before.
